This might be a stupid question.....

What is a funnel base? I keep hearing the term and/or the word. Can anyone explain?

Alright, it is when a specific type of wall design is used to funnel troops for example giants. The walls funnel the giants to where you want them to go. Then these funnels contain traps, in this case, spring traps. The reason of the funnel is to control the giant yourself. By this I mean you can make the giant go to where you want it to go. That's what the funnel does. When you put a building in this funnel for example a defense, the giants will be funnelled to that defense. That's where the spring trap does it's job and send the giants flying. I'll edit this post with a picture of a funnel.

I made another post for the sake of simplicity. The following picture shows what a funnel may look like.

As you can see in the picture, the giants are targeting the cannon. The giants, in this case are getting funnelled into the trap. A funnel won't do much without traps. The traps are the key to for a funnel to be successful.

so i would put traps around the empty spaces by the cannon to set the giants off flying?

Yes you put the spring traps as where the giants will go to. For example:

1. This is a very basic funnel and you will need to put the spring trap in the corner as that's where the giants will go to. As you can also see it has only one hole in the funnel and that's where 100% the giants will go to.

2. Relating to point 1, the picture below shows a bad funnel. This type of funnel requires 3 spring traps as you won't know where the giants path is. If you put the spring trap in the middle, the giants will probably go above it or below it or on it. So this is why the picture below is a bad funnel.

3. The type of funnels you should focus on doing (if you are planning to add a funnel to your base) is the picture below. That type of funnel is usually the best funnel to have and used in most bases.

So i would set up about 3 or 4 of these around the outskirts of my base, right? Also, are there any internal (inside the base center) funnels, or just ones that are only located outside?

Try just setting up four only. A funnel on the north side, east side, west side and south side.

I forgot to also mention that you shouldn't be putting funnels inside your base as it can waste walls that could have been used to protecting your storages.
