I would upgrade if you have maxed all buildings. You can either farm league bonus in champions league below 3200 cups or dead bases in gold or silver leagues.

Some questions to ask yourself to help inform the decision
- Will you ever upgrade to TH10?
TH9 has the best wars imo, good reason to not, TH9.5 subverts the challenge of wars
It sounds like you plan to move up to TH10, so ...
- Will you go TH11 once it's available (and you're ready)
Waiting at TH9 stalls your eventual progress to TH11 (if it comes out early enough that it makes a difference, if it's 3 years away it doesn't matter) by not progressing your buildings/lab.
- Do you want to work on your royals more now?
DE is easier as a TH10. Higher troop levels and more Army Camp space make Master and higher leagues easier.
Plus a third drill.
However, walls will likely take more work and you'll have more than enough DE to max your royals, whenever you have enough.
- Do you care about walls? What eventual level would you like?
TH10 requires 431M gold and 151M elixir for structures and lab. (no walls). This is an excess of 280M elixir that you can dump to walls. Since you'll need to also farm say 200 skull walls, you'll also earn another 100M excess elixir or so. 380M elixir converts your walls to legos and about 50 additional to lavas. Do you want walls higher than that in the end?
There's an argument to be made both ways, that walls are better farmed with 40/40 heros (see Ash's recent gold farming 85M gold in a day?!?!) or that it's better at TH9 due to being able to pick on TH8. In the end I wouldn't let this sway you too much either way
- Do you war, how so?
This is the big one. Once you go, there's no coming back. Unless you start a second account.
As a TH10 I know I will eventually be bored by wars. The skill required for three stars is generally too high versus good base designs, whereas at TH9 I hold out hope to be challenged. It may turn out that things are too easy at TH9 eventually.
Overall since you have walls and royals to work on you won't be wasting any resources. In the end, assuming you will eventually be TH10, it comes down to where you'd rather farm for walls, if you want to farm for them at all.
Both TH9 and TH10 have merits. One additional advantage of going TH10 is getting closer to going TH11, if/when it's available. Staying TH9 will stall your progress on buildings/lab in that sense.
I think for the TH11 reason, I'd suggest going TH10 sooner rather than later.
I wouldn't worry about Xbows or other defenses. All the standard farming armies that work at TH9 work just as well if not better at TH10. (with proper base selection)
Thank you so so much for your in depth reply, that was very helpful! I understood the math, I was just concerned about the actual effort of farming that amount of gold and elixir as a TH10, because of the aforementioned reasons. My friends always told me that farming was a lot harder at TH10... Never realised DE would actually be more plentiful at TH10.
DE is definitely easier. DE only really accumulates in TH9 and TH10. So you don't lose that many targets to loot penalty (TH8) and you increase your farming ability. Morgauth's conclusion after going TH10 on his second account was that he should have done it a lot sooner.
@Sservis, I also have a defenseless account. I had been following your progress but can no longer find it in rushed one. I saw that you recently got to TH9 I believe? I am currently TH7 (IGN: Hugh Jr. Clan: dragons50 for reference) with 3 days left before TH8. It is my understanding that TH8 is relatively weak because of the lack of army camp/spell factory upgrades. Was just wondering how long you stayed at TH8 and how long you plan on staying at 9? Also, have you noticed a significant change in your war weight because of walls since the update? I currently have almost no walls, but kind of wanted to dump gold into them just because, but didn't want to spike my war weight. Thanks for this thread btw, a lot of useful information.
:)
awsome thread
I'm currently sitting clanless on Sservis/Sservis - 1/Sservis - 2 which used to be in Rushed One.
My defenseless sits in a clan with coworkers. I had been developing it fairly slowly. It sat as TH7 for a long while. Recently, I started a push. I spent about 3 weeks in TH8. Long enough to max both DB and do some lab work for golaloon at TH9 (th8 lab (4) + barb 5 (5) + archer 5 (5) + balloon 5 (5) + rage 5 (7) - th9 lab (5) = 21 days) I'll pick up the missing pieces in 9 or 10 (wiz/wb/golem likely in that order).
TH9 has more work (db to 6 (34), storages (9), drills (36), camps (20), lab (5), sf (5), cc (7) = 126 days). Given that I'm going to try hard to keep 2 builders working on heros (and 1 for walls), that's at least 63 days in TH9. I still have 11 collectors at level 11 (another 55 days = 27.5 with 2 builders) if I do this. I am likely pushing those into TH10. My plan for the lab is balloon 6 (10), barb 6 (10), archer 6 (10), hound 2 (10), wiz 5 (5), jump 2 (5), wb 5 (5), start golem 2 (10) to finish 1 day after lab ends in TH10. I will probably need to adjust this as I've used more than 2 builders initially in TH9, so I won't be there as long.
Walls are not too much war weight if you don't have defenses. I'm doing them because I twitch at wasting the resources and in case I decide to build defenses in the future, I'll have the wall grind done. Since defenses total 760M or so, as long as I get lavas and 240M spent on zaps (60 walls), elixir change while farming for defenses will pay for the rest. if I do that.
PS- TH8 has bigger troop upgrades that compensate for no army camp upgrades. TH9 is the other way around.
@sservis, wanted to get your thoughts on something if you don't mind. I have a defenseless account. My purpose in making it was to be able to attack th9 and 10 because I'm in a clan with family and friends some of whom aren't good attackers or upgraded def before offense and I want them to be able to attack down to their skill level/troop level (around th8 would be 3 star-able for them who are mostly th9). Early in the defenseless journey it was easy because I could boost for an hour and have enough elixer for a whole week of upgrades and wars. However, due to rl obligations I'm realizing that boosting in 2 hour sessions is not going to be possible and it seems to be necessary because obviously when I log off I get 3 starred. The way I farm on my other account is loonion for at least 200000/200000/1500 log off get sniped (real attacked only once in like 20 attacks) then loonion again in ~45 minutes. This form of farming suits my schedule better and I was wondering if there would be a way to have a strong enough base (obviously having no resources through dumps into walls is the best but have to save large amounts of de which is my main concern) to encourage a decent amount of snipes as a th10 while being matched as a th8. I was thinking about building point defense and skipping mortars and little bombs because I don't find them useful honestly. Infernos are a good attack deterrent but I've heard they are weighted really heavily. Just wanted your opinion if you've got time. Thanks
If you want to encourage snipes, I would suggest leveling walls (and some interior defenses). I would prioritize any defenses that defend versus both ground and air for war effectiveness. If you want to protect your loot, mortars are a good option, but they won't don't defend versus air in war. It gets down to a question of your goals. As long as you are the bottom base on the map, I wouldn't worry about how easy your war base is to 3 star in war, so anything that helps you defend your loot is useful.
I know that when I scan bases, I use walls as a major first guide to how upgraded the base is. I don't know what mix would achieve your goal. I know that my main base ranks as a very new TH9 (TH8 max is 55k, I'm currently 56k) and gets predominantly sniped. My assortment is near complete skull walls, all TH9 defenses at TH6 levels. I also have 4 level 1 teslas and max traps, but you could skip those as attackers don't see them when deciding to raid you or not (and it would reduce the ranking somewhat)
Also, If you have max drills/collectors at TH9 you can pretty much keep all the resources that you farm if you empty collectors just before you lose your shield (or before you intentionally break it/logoff to keep it on a 12 hour cycle instead of dealing with a 16 hr cycle that repeats every 2 days)
