Correct. If this is the source of your reasoning simply upgrade to TH9 and never buy any of the new defenses, walls or queen. Your war score would still be the same as a TH8 for matchmaking purposes . . . until you start to upgrade you walls with elixir, add new troops, upgrade camps . . . you could sit there forever at TH8 strength with your storages full. Because TH9 can't spend elixir on your level walls either. Upgrade. Grow. Expand. That's the point of the game.

Like badfish said. You want access to TH9 upgrades without the drawback of actually being TH9. Guess what. I want access to a high paying job without paying high wage taxes too.

I've seen 8.5 and 9.5 in a few thread titles but I'm not familiar with the strategy. Would you care to share some details or just the basic premise of the strategy?

Defenses are weighted more heavily than offense in matchmaking. For example, your rank will rise dramatically once you've built your x-bows.

But if you don't upgrade your defenses past TH8-levels, your rank will remain low.

Seeing that you care nothing about the loot penalties and only care about your ranking in war, this might be something you'd be interested in.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll upgrade my balloons before moving to TH9 though as I've neglected them after TH6.

I left my loons for last too. I found they were useless until lvl6 . . . when they become awesome.

If they did make legos available at th8 it would definitely be too op and other th8s would need better troops to counter them unless all the th8s switched to drags or hogs instead of GiArch or barch

Even if you move to th9 it still doesn't fix the wall issues. Elix can only be used beyond lvl 8 concerning walls. Gold was the only option 4 walls in my early days... I did half at th8 and finished skulls early th9. Not sure why peeps continue 2 ask for this feature being it was only for a very very short time. Nobody got screwed over returning to the better loot system! Elix blew hard for the short amount of time this feature was offered. Those continuing 2 ask for this are being played by the game.... Instead of just playing it! I think gas should be cheaper! I wonder if big oil would consider a price drop??

Level 9 walls don't need to be made available at TH8 just to accommodate people that still have level 3 balloons and don't want to upgrade to TH9 for war matchmaking reasons.

Like I said earlier, you can't have the best of both worlds at the expense of the entire game economy.

There are benefits AND drawbacks to many decisions in the game, and when to upgrade your town hall is one of them. What matters is which benefit is more important to you, and which drawbacks you most want to avoid. By deciding to upgrade to TH8 with level 3 balloons, you created an even more difficult situation for yourself, since you obviously want to upgrade them now before moving to TH9. It would be nice for you now if you were suddenly allowed to have level 9 walls at TH8, but what about when you get to TH9/TH10 and all the TH8s are still allowed to dump resources into level 9 walls?

Changes to the function of resources in the game come with side-effects, and a horrible economy was the result of allowing TH7s and TH8s to upgrade walls with elixir. Thank the Clash gods that the economy is more balanced once again because this mistake was removed.

I already maxed my walls to level 8 so I would be able to upgrade with elixir at TH9. What I was trying to highlight when I made this post is the big disparity between gold upgrades and elixir upgrades at TH8.

I have also read some suggestions of shifting some gold upgrades to TH7 to help rebalance TH7 and improve gold-elix upgrade ratio at TH8 even by a little.
