3-Star Academy - Be The "Go-To" Player

The 3-Star Academy was made with one goal in mind: show all of you how to 3-star so that you can become the "go to" player in your clan!

There are too many players out there who think that it is impossible to 3-star their equal in wars. There are too many players being rejected from clans because they can't 3-star on a consistent basis. And there are too many clans losing wars because most of their players don't know how to 3-star anyone!

For a long time, I couldn't 3-star anyone. It's true. I was a TH9 that could farm as good as anyone but... I could not 3-star an enemy TH9 in wars. Hell, I struggled to 3-star some TH8s! I was just like you... But! I have changed! And with the help of the 3-Star Academy, so can you.

The tips, tricks and strategies that I share in my videos are what got me into a kick-♥♥♥, competitive war clan! They are what I use to get 6-stars every war! I am one of the "go-to" players in my clan and you can be too with the help of the 3-Star Academy.

But Castles, you're a TH9... I'm not. How can I learn from you?
The short answer is that even if you aren't a TH9, like me, you can still learn from my videos! Most of my attacks can be performed at TH8 and TH10 with some minor adjustments. Comment on YouTube with any questions you have!

If you really can't get around the fact that you're a different TH level than me, you can always learn from the videos in the Cold September series! That series will showcase attacks made by TH8-TH10!

What device do I play on?
All of my gameplay happens on my iPhone! Recordings are done with my Mac. I do NO gameplay on any device besides my iPhone.

Great videos, learned a lot. I've got all three Teslas going to six right now and my second dark barracks to four so I'm thinking of upgrading to th9 soon. My question is should I? Troop wise all are maxed except WB 4, Healer 2, Lightning 4, minions 3, hogs 2 going to 3, and gollum and valk 1.

My clan wars a lot. Should I hang out at 8 a lot and max collectors and if so which of the above troops do I need to max for early th9 war strategies?

Hey StannisB, thanks for writing to me!

Should you upgrade to TH9 now, or wait?
If I were you, I would wait to upgrade to TH9 until you finish all of your troop upgrades. I know that sometimes, waiting to finish every single upgrade can feel like a waste of time, but it's not! Especially when you are interested in being a 3-star expert.

Going to war is different at every town hall level. Delaying TH9 until you finish all of your upgrades will give you time to perfect the art of the 3-star at TH8.

Think of it this way... each town hall level builds off of one another when it comes to wars. If you can't 3-star consistently at TH8, you likely won't 3-star consistently at TH9, etc. Your best bet is to delay upgrading your TH until you 3-star consistently at each TH level.

If you're already a 3-star master at TH8, then discuss upgrading to TH9 with your clan. If they think it's a good idea, go for it!

Which troops do you prioritize for TH9 strategies?
Your safest option is P.E.K.K.A., Golem and Wizards! This will allow you to go after people with the infamous GoWiPe. GoWiPe's are typically a 2-star attack, although some turn into 3-stars. They are not my preferred attack, but they are definitely a safe choice. In my experience, competitive clans want to see these troops max'd more than anything else.

On the other hand, you're already in a clan! So who cares what other people want? In my opinion, if you want to be a 3-star player, prioritize Lava Hounds, Balloons, Jump Spell and your Heroes! TH9's are very susceptible to cold-blood LaLoons!

I worried about the pause button after everything was said and done. My goal is to keep the videos as short as possible without sacrificing details. I'll definitely try to fix that going forward! First video jitters, I guess :facepalm:

At this point I can pretty much three star almost any maxed th8 with some version of dragloon. Pekka are at three already. I've heard good things about hogs at 9 but mine are only just starting towards three. I'm probably going to do balloons first thing at th9 so should I just forgo hogs and get minions to 4?

Hogs are more important than minions, if you ask me! And if you're smoking TH8's, go ahead and start the upgrade to TH9! :thumbsup:

Instructional videos are great, but sometimes people need specific advice in order to improve. Recognizing this, I am now offering custom replay breakdowns. Simply invite me to your clan so that I can record the replay of your failed attack and I will break down where you went wrong! Your name and the name of your clan will be blurred! Giving you and everyone else a great opportunity to learn some of the finer details of attacking!

ign Cody clan name Chaos starz I've been looking for a strategy to use with the troops I have upgraded. I've mostly used Gowipe because it's basically a guaranteed 2 star but it's hard to 3 star with that strategy. I'm a new th9 my gowipe troops other then golems are maxed for 9 and drags but my loons and hogs aremt really upgraded much and those two troops seem to be essential for almost every war strategy. Haha sorry this is so long I just wanted to be specific.

You should be able to do the Cold-Blood LaLoon with 1 jump, 2 rage and 1 lightning BUT if your wizards and heroes can kill the enemy clan castle troops without any help, go ahead and take 1 jump and 3 rage!

help for TH8!

Love the videos Castles, but I'm really struggling to 3* TH8.. I'm pretty maxed apart from Dark troops and pekka is on L2.. I have been using dragons but can't beat L6 AirD. lots of bases in war have L6 AirD in center positions, and even taking one out with 3 lightning spells don't work. I keep getting put against TH9's too - which I find vertually impossible to 2 star!
Just need some advice, should I be learning another attack strategy? Any advice would be appreciated, I want to get 3*'s! 😊👍thanks Castles! My Clan tag is #88R98RPV name:Veedubya 👍

How about clan castles? The wars I've been in usually have dragons in clan castles, and when I don't bait and expect pups to handle them it just ruins my whole attack. I have max balloons and lvl 2 hounds and max rage, as well. Love your videos man. Thx in advance

Excellent question, Jcrosb and thank you for the compliment.

Dragons are the one and only clan castle troop that I worry about when I am using the Penta LaLooon.

How do you handle them? Easy. Archer Queen and pups. If you're without an archer queen, or your AQ is not level 5+, you won't want to use a Penta on a base with a dragon in the CC. But with a lvl5+ AQ, a dragon shouldn't cause you any problems.

If you know a base has a dragon in the CC and you have a level 5+ AQ but you're still nervous, save 1 of your 4 rage spells for the very end so that you can use it on your AQ at the same time that you use her special ability to handle the dragon.

I see your point too, photographer, maybe it was the only example vid available? I have problems with TH8 AD6 x 3. But have a little look at Cold Sept vid on thread page 5, the first attack is a great TH8 AD6 x3 3* win. And the dragons are in a long line and then draw in with rage spell, because there are no destractions to the east or to the west to draw them away, which I think that is the point of this video. You also see CC max loons come into play more too.👍 I'm still waiting for my 1st 3* star on maxed TH8.. Maybe next war tho.😃

I get the point, but show us how your massively wide sweep of dragons works against AD666 on th8, when you need that firepower concentrated to burn through high HP storages to reach the AD6. 2 level 3 drags vs 2 storages with an AD6 behind that the dragons will never make it passed the storages unless you have 4 or 5 drags concentrated.

The number of air defences and their placement have nothing to do with the pathing principles outlined in the video. My only objective was to help viewers understand this: If you drop all of your dragons at one location, the likelihood of them bunching up and funnelling around the base is increased significantly. When that happens, it doesn't matter how many air defences there are or what level they are, you're in trouble.

The video was not meant to be a "How To Dragon 3-Star" guide. It was only meant to illustrate the point I just mentioned. You seem to have watched it and interpreted it as me explaining how to get a 3-star dragon raid, which, as I just said, is not what that video is.

You and many other viewers have expressed interest in TH8 content. I am going to be putting some up tomorrow, Sunday.

As Vee has pointed out, there is already some TH8 content posted in the "Cold Sept" war recap video. The TH8's of Cold September and of Cold Sept have absolutely no problem getting 3-stars on other TH8's regardless of the number of air defences or their levels. Again, I'll be sharing some of it tomorrow.

Im a fairly new TH9 and I've had fair success using GoWiWi attacks in wars getting at least 2 stars nearly every time, but I want to start 3 starring in wars consistently. Your Penta LaLoon attack really looks promising but I was wondering, can it be effective without having Level 2 Lava Hounds?

Hey Jimni! Thanks for the comment. Stick with me and you'll be one of the "go-to" players in your clan in no time ;)

As for your question, yes, you can Penta with level1 Hounds however as is the case with any attack, you have to weigh all the factors to determine your chances of success. For example, if you scout a base and it has 4 level7 ADs, trying a Penta with level1 hounds might not be the best idea. On the other hand, if a base has a few level6 ADs and a few level5 ADs, you can probably get 3-stars with a Penta using level1 hounds, depending on the level of the AQ, Xbows and the layout of the ADs.

The hardest thing about this game is that there is no "answer", you know? You just have to play, watch, read and develop your like... "Clash sense", haha. It's like your 7th sense. You get a feel for the game and after awhile, you kind of just "know" if an attack is gonna work or not.

Just got the new Air Sweeper, and based on my early observations I think it will NOT be a balloon nerf ... It will just force some minor tweaks to how you attack:smirk:

Can i ask for advice sir my main attack now in th9 is pentalaloon and i have been doing good with it using your guide 3 starring tough bases but i havent tried any variant of it yet and need advice on what to research next to have another 3 star strategy instead of pentalaloon :) here are my troops and level 2 hounds finish tomorrow http://www.tiikoni.com/tis/view/?id=a251e0e

You're welcome and thank you for the compliments! I would most definitely upgrade Golems next if your priority is air attacks! Get them to level 3+ and start to work on your Cold Blood attacks!

You don't need both of your heroes for Cold-Blood LaLoon or for Shattered. It depends on the base. You definitely need at least 1 of them. Also, remember that Shattered is just a Cold-Blood with two golems. You only use a Shattered if you think you could take out 2 AD's with an extra tank.

Thanks for the earlier advice back in the thread. I Turned TH9 on Tuesday morning. Lab (w times healer upgrade going on to finish as it does), spell factory and clan castle upgrading. I opted out of wars until my spell factory comes back online

Question is what troop to do first for war. Hogs or loons? Wanted to use DE to quickly get my Queen up to snuff but are loons still viable post sweeper? All troops maxed th8 except Valkyrie, Golem, Minion 3, WB 4.

It all depends on the sort of attacker you are, Stannis! I would recommend Loons because you can start to 3-star people using GoWiWi/GoWiPe with Loons. Loons also set you up to level your Lava Hounds next which means you can start to use Cold-Blood LaLoon and Penta LaLoon which are the two strongest attacks available right now in my opinion.

Hogs are also a viable option! GoWiWi/GoWiPe with hogs added in or Cold-Blood Hog raids are definitely ways of achieving the 3-Star.

You just have to decide which you want to start using first!

I just released a video about the sweeper, check it out! I also released a video today of me 3-starring a person using a Cold-Blood LaLoon and they had a sweeper in their base.

Question: In Cold-blood LaLoon, why are you going with Cold-Blood when it seems like your meeting your own criteria for Pentaloon? (i.e. AQ < L10, AD < 777, etc.)

For Choda you say that he waiting until the AT dropped before dropping his CC loons. This isn't correct. He correctly waited until the last AD started firing on the dragons coming from 6:00 before releasing his CC loons. The AT wasn't even being attacked when he dropped his CC loons (he did it correctly though)

Thanks for the reply, Lunaticfringe! Occasionally a base can meet my criteria for a Penta LaLoon but I decide to hit it with a Cold-Blood LaLoon anyway. Why? Well, sometimes I am just in the mood for a Cold-Blood... that's all there is to it, really. In my opinion, a Penta is a safer attack than a Cold-Blood and that is why I gave the criteria — so that newer players/improving players would have a guideline upon which to base their decision that would more often than not lead them to use a Penta instead of a Cold-Blood.

As for the Dragon video, you're right — Choda did wait until the AD was focusing a Dragon. But he did also wait for the AT, as I said ;) While he didn't want the AD focusing his loons, it was simply a bonus that the dragon took aggro. 5 max level loons could handle that ADs aggro. What they couldn't handle was losing their pathing!

Ok. My first pentaloon attack gave me...46%.

It was dismal. If you want to swing by and point and laugh at your fellow canuck, I would appreciate it. I think that my main problem is that I just got th9 so my loons are lvl 5. I also went with a heal and 3 rages to heal those level 5 loons.

But I would like any critique of my technique. I would really like to destroy the bases

Sorry for the confusion, Geordiedan. I actually have yet to encounter the problem you mention, but if/when I do I will post a video about it...

Even before the update, there was no way of controlling when your pups focus the AQ, so I have never really worried about it too much. Something you could do, I suppose, would be to reserve your Penta for bases that have the AQ mixed in with defensive units. If the AQ is sitting next to an AD or some other defensive unit, she will typically die to the AoE from loon bombs. This tactic isn't new... some of my clanmates only Penta when the AQ stands a chance of dying to Loon AoE.

Besides the tactic I just mentioned, there isn't much you can do. There's no way to identify with 100% certainty where your Hounds will burst into pups, which means there isn't much we can do to influence their decision to target the AQ.

Anyway, like I said, don't worry about it too much. Ultimately, if an AQ is ruining your Pentas, then you likely should have hit the base with a Cold-Blood. As I've indicated in other videos, we only want to Penta when the AQ won't be a problem! Among other considerations :thumbsup:

(Cough, cough)...the AT wasn't even under attack when he dropped his loons. The drags were on the, "War and Love" CC :)

Apologies if I missed it, but for Penta I believe one of your criteria was when the ADs were like 6 or less.

What happens if they are L7 or higher? Cold-blooded? Other?

And what if, say, 2 ADs are L7, but the other two are L6? Can you still go Penta?

The answer to your and everyone else's question about the criteria I set out is this: there is no right answer. The criteria is meant to be a guide. It is not meant to give you a definitive answer in all cases.

Generally speaking, a base with no level 7 ADs, an AQ that is lower than level 10 and no level 3 X-bows means you can hit it with a Penta, depending on the placement of the ADs.

What happens if the ADs are level7? Well, the AQ and X-bows better be very weak or your level 2 Hounds are going to get rocked.

What if a few ADs are level 7 and the other two are level 6? You tell me. What level is the AQ? What level are the X-Bows? How are the ADs positioned?

My only goal is to provide you and everyone else with guidelines. Guidelines are meant to be interpreted on a case-by-case basis. No one can give you a "Golden Rule" when it comes to any attacks, unfortunately.

No, I totally understand. I was just curious as to what you prefer is all. It feels like you'll default to Cold-Blooded when in doubt, which is cool. I've done several LavaLoon attacks (friend's acct), but I'd still consider myself a novice. As such, any guidelines in terms of when to use what is huge! :D

I think it's much safer now if we just run CB, especially if you have hi lvl hero...

But just now I got trouble with cc full of 30 aarcher, well it's hard to lure, if he put cc on opposite where quenn at.. even golem and heroes have trouble waiting they come out one by one.....
