When to start walls at TH9

I have my walls all skulls, about 10 legos. I have been keeping all my builders busy on defense, drills, heroes(10bk, 11aq). I was planning on keeping one builder free, but I always give in and start another defense. I'm doing all my expensive defenses first: xbows both at 3, 3 wiz towers at 7 etc.. But I always feel that i'm wasting a builder(have 5), by keeping one on walls at this point.

At TH8, I waited and did all my walls after maxing my defense. Not sure the best plan for 9, as i'm not in a big rush to get to 10, but like being able to defend my loot when it gets up there. If I dump all my resources into walls, then when my builders are free, I have to time it right to have enough for my next upgrade or face another builder sitting there. Just looking for advice from people who went through the same problem that I am facing. Focus more on walls, defenses lag behind a bit or get most defenses up, then grind walls?

I maxed all of my th9 defenses when I had half skulls, and now I am working on finishing walls and heroes.

If you got all your important defences maxed on th9 it is ok to go for th 10.

Grind your heroes as you do your defenses. Prior to upgrading each hero or an elixer upgrade, dump all your gold into walls.

Also, try to get some Legos up to Lavas, so that you will not face a situation where you are stuck with all Legos and needing 3M a pop to upgrade, instead of being able to upgrade remaining Skulls to Legos.

Start from day 1 itself. Always, always farm at least 4mil extra resources (gold/lix) before an upgrade to dump into walls. This should be easy as most upgrades cost >3mil gold/elixir, just dump the opposite loot into walls. Defenses actually do not matter in defending loot, if you leave a builder free then you can dump loot everytime you farm any. You will never get wrecked because you have nothing to be wrecked for. I still have mostly TH8 defenses and I've been sniped the past 1-2 months because I kept a builder free for walls.

Think about it, max defenses then keep 3-4 builders idle to do walls. Or keep a builder perpetually free and possibly finish half lavas before defenses are maxed?

You have this backwards, in my opinion.

To the OP, I'm a TH9 with max defenses, 26/30 heroes, and 177/250 lavas (rest legos). My one regret is that I maxed my defenses too early. I wish that I'd left my xbows and archer towers one step from max, to draw less heat in matchmaking and exploit my high level walls and heroes. My base is pretty routinely two starred by top TH9s/early TH10s, but very rarely three starred. I highly doubt that lower level defenses would cause my base to be three starred on a regular basis, so why max them so soon, when walls and heroes take so long to grind out?

As soon as possible.

the faster you get those walls going, the better. The intimidation factor is a thing, and a th9 with lv10 walls is really impressive.

and if you plan to max th9, you're going to be stuck doing heroes for a while, meaning gold and elixir have an endless dump. The walls. 1 or 3 million each, a wall.

Well, I always feel like I would be getting more out of a Tesla upgrade for instance, than a few legos. But I understand that at some point, if I don't balance out the wall upgrade time along with my D, then I will be left with builders just sitting around and have a lot of walls to do. I guess i'll just keep one builder for walls, then just save some gold, when I am getting another builder free. Once i'm done with my De drills(L5 each now). I won't really need elixir for much, and can dump it into walls. So nice to have that option now.

I like the advice about doing some lavas before I finish my legos. I guess if I have some big loot nights, I can just do a few lavas in the key areas, so I'm not faced with just lavas in the future.

I have been sitting on five sleeping builders for a long, long time. I would love to be sitting in the middle of our war roster instead of right at the top, as big heroes make three starring mid-level TH9s much, much easier. Instead of just carrying my weight in war (which I like to think I do), I should be killing my "mirrors." It would be simple to start the final defensive upgrades when you think you're getting ready for TH10.

Justify to yourself, how does that tesla ever going to help you? It does not add intimidation factor, you do not need to protect loot with it and it is detrimental in war unless you maxed key offenses already. That can be said for almost any defense in game. If you want to be an asset in war and ever want a maxed base, you should start working on walls now, unless you farm <2mil each per day

walls without a doubt man...work on offense first. CoC is an offensive game. You don't get bonus loot for successful defenses.

If your goal is to max lavas before TH10, you should start as soon as possible as walls generally take much longer to complete than defensive upgrades. But don't get stressed over it. If you don't feel comfortable about farming that much resources between each upgrades, it's okay to settle with legos which takes much shorter time to complete, even easier if you focus on it at the end of TH9.

For reference, by the time I finished all my defensive upgrades, I have about 90 days of waiting time left in laboratory upgrades. (I didn't wait for walls and DE troops at TH8, so it could be very different for you.) If you farm 3 lavas per day, you can still finish them before TH10 if you were to wait for laboratory upgrades.

Alternatively, you could move onto TH10 and work on lavas after you finished most of TH10 upgrades. From what I read, it takes about 4 months to finish all defensive upgrades at TH10, so you would be already 3/4 way through if you don't wait for laboratory upgrades and walls at TH9. Gold/elixir farming would be 67%-100% as fast (based on various sources; although I tend to think it would be 67%-80% as fast) while DE farming would be much faster. So it's still manageable.

I personally try to do 1-2 legos and a defense, every time a builder comes available. If possible.

I don't prioritize walls very high, but I don't want to be stuck doing all 250 legos and nothing else, my mind will go insane.

So 1-3 here and there and then grind out the last bit whilst doing heroes.

IMO lavas are no required to go to townhall 10. My plan is full lego 20/20 heroes, maybe 25/25 heroes.

I just do them in between.
Have 3 builders doing upgrades (2 on defences and 1 on heroes), and have 1 builder free.
Whenever I have extra loot ill dump it in my walls

It's simple math:

BK levels 10-30 = 135 Days
AQ levels 1-30 = 157.5 Days
Total = 292.5 Days / 7 Days per Week ~ 42 Weeks

Maxing Defenses = 803.25 Days / 4 builders ~ 201 Days / 7 Days per Week ~ 29 Weeks

42 Weeks - 29 Weeks = 13 Weeks extra = 3 Months extra

Do you really want to raise 1,000,000,000 Gold/Elixir in just 3 months? Do you really want to wait 3 months with 4 idle builders? Can you farm 1,000,000,000 Gold/Elixir in 3 months? Can you finish your heroes in 42 weeks? These are the questions you should be asking yourself when contemplating the original question.
