I'm sure this idea won't be too popular, since defenses would be left out, and I fully expect this idea to be rejected by SC, but here goes anyway...
Intro
In ancient wars (at least the ones we see in movies and tv), battles were fought on a field with soldiers from both sides facing off against each other. Neither side brought buildings and big rock walls with them. Just solders on the battle field.
Idea
Have offense-only melee matches/wars. I train the troops I want to bring to the battle, then I place them on my side of the battle map in any arrangement I choose. Maybe I want some pekkas or golems leading the charge, with range troops and dragons behind them. Or multiple rows of barbarians out in front to flood the enemy side while my dragons hover over and burn the enemy troops. Whatever arrangement you want to set for your side. While I am doing this, the enemy will be setting up their melee attack arrangement. I would not be able to see his troop arrangement until the battles starts and he wouldn't see mine. You can try to guess what troops they will use and where they will place them on the map, but that could get pretty hard to predict. Then when the battle starts, all troops rush and meet somewhere in the middle for melee combat. Whatever side has troops surviving in the end wins. Maybe multiple stars are earned by having more of your troops survive the battle (i.e. less than 10 troops left = 1 star, 11-25 left = 2 stars, 25+ surviving troops = 3 stars).
Strategies would develop over time about clustering certain combinations of troops together or optimal battle formations with different combinations of troops.
- Perhaps bombs and traps could also be setup along with the troop arrangement on your side of the map.
- Each melee arena could optionally have some random structures/obstacles in place (probably have to be even on both sides).
- Perhaps even a row or two of walls through the middle, separating the two opponents that the troops must break through or fly over to get to the enemy. This would make wallbreakers relevant in melee battles.
- Possibly a "capture the flag" feature built in where you can earn an additional star by getting/destroying the opponents "flag" (probably a TH instead) before they get yours. Maybe goblins would rush to the "flag" in this mode (so they aren't useless to use in melee matches). This could mean that you could "capture" the enemies "flag" for a star, but the enemy could still earn stars by having their troops survive in the end.
- Maybe random lightning strikes during the match and troops from both sides can be damages.
- Other spells could randomly appear on the arena that would affect troops from both sides.
Conclusion
Imagine the awesome chaos of seeing two armies of troops on a map rushing toward each other with the possibility of spells and obstacles to overcome while they fight to the death in "hand-to-hand" melee combat. Again this is obviously offense only, so anyone who favors defense will probably hate this idea. But I think it would be a pretty awesome add-in to the game. This might even be a good way to break ties in wars. Have both sides' offenses duke it out in the melee arena.
One more thing...
This would be pretty cool for 1 vs 1 multiplayer attacks. In wars, you would be matched automatically with the other clan by ranking maybe. So #1 vs #1, #2 vs #2, etc. OR, better yet... In wars there could be a single oversized base/arena and all can members can place their troops on the same map. Basically my entire clans troops vs all the other clans troops fighting a single epic battle at the same time. I could mix some of my troops in mini armies on the map with my clanmates' troops. We could form lots of small platoons in various places or just spread all the troops out anywhere on our side for one big massive army that attacks together. Imagine creating your own epic battle with various hordes of similar (or different, your choice) troops placed strategically on your side of a large melee arena. This would be a glorious sight to see!
