I actually had a similar idea and would be posting it tomorrow.

What I propose is a unit that can launch splash attacks (Catapults) or concentrated attacks (Balistas) towards the inside of the base that will help opposing forces eliminate these threats while other units are pushing through the first line of defense.
Now they would be specifically for extreme long range attacks that could shoot a minimum of 12 tiles and a max of around 16-18. If they are able to destroy all the units within their target radius then they would be able to reposition themselves for more attacks, but at a pace that would make Golems look like Olympic sprinters.
When upgraded, these projectiles could speed up a little with their repositioning and their ammunition could change graphics as well. (Ex. Level 3 catapult would start launching a flaming Boulder, or a flaming arrow in the case of the Balistas) Also their attack would be stronger as well naturally.
now to prevent people from upgrading these units to max level and dropping a rage spell on them (consequently launching a small nuclear attack on the insides of a base) I would suggest that spells do not effect the stats of these units. Being that it's an inanimate object of destruction it would not feel the emotion of rage, thus the spell would have no effect on it.
I also think that its health should be rather moderate, which would cause the person deploying said unit to carefully place it so that it could yield maximum damage while avoiding it's destruction.
instead of making this a troop in the barracks I think it would be better to have a separate spot of construction. An engineering station of some sorts. Also the maximum amount of these units that could be stored would be 4. That way one could be placed on all sides of a playing field launching attacks towards the inside of a base. Even though these units are not built in the barracks I would think that a housing space of 15-20 would be sufficient so that bringing 4 units to battle would cost about 60-80 spaces of an opposers army.
much like spells I don't think it should be something that could be donated. Rather it would be strictly a unit built and deployed by a single player cause I think this would be too strong of a defensive unit.
At SC disgrestion this idea could be tweaked to fit the balance that they strive for within the game but I believe it would be a very interesting addition to gameplay. It would open doors for completely different strategies when attacking and add a fresh obstacle for clanners to defend against.
I could not complete my post so far. I shall be doing that tomorrow, till then please check my thread, from my profile.
