I have dragons in my lab right now and after they're done the only troops I'd have left are golems and valks... but raising 110k DE for them seems a bit steep... is it absolutely necessary to do them before TH9 or not even recommended?

Neither are necessary, don't stop yourself from upgrading just to research those two troops. DE comes a lot easier at TH9 and although you will be dumping a lot into heroes, you should still make enough to research golems at the very least. Valks are an acquired taste...they get less cost effective the higher you level them so unless you're already pro with them I'd say they are a waste of de.
Not at TH8. I'm a good way into TH9 and I still haven't upgraded either of them- though golems are moving up the list.
I wouldn't actually worry about maxing any of your dark troops at TH8, personally. My minions and hogs were lv 3, and now I have 2 lv6 drills pumping out DE, and lv 6 giants/loons for DE hunting- it's a cinch getting DE.
Not to mention my defences can actually maintain DE, anytime my DE approached 1k available as a TH8 I would get wrecked. Take the plunge and focus on DE at TH9.
You'll need Golems at TH9 for war when drag attacks stop being effective. But I didn't upgrade mine until TH9, where DE is a lot easier to get, and you've got way more time to work on everything in lab while defences and walls and heroes take their sweet time to upgrade. No point staying at TH8 to do them.
Forget Valks at TH8, total waste of time.
Golems however if you can do them it will be of benefit. Once you hit TH9 you'll need them more and more in wars, so getting lv 2 now will help.
Get your golem to lvl2 because you will need it a lot in GoWiXx. 60k de in th8 is not a big amount. You could get it in 2 days and at max in 3 days. The golem will stay as your main troop through th9 and also in th10 so upgrade it as much as you can. I don't see a lot of outcome from valks but if you have extra time do it as you will do it anyway
I got lvl 2 golems on th8 they are a complete waste of dark exlixir after the skeleton trap which is too much for them to handle,ibwould not ware your breath upgrading them

Do your golem, they are central to so many important attack strategies you won't be sorry, unless of course you don't war.
Even if you don't subscribe to goxxx for every base they will still become an integral part of your kill crew for most hog or loon based attacks at 9.
As for valks, up to you, some people love them, and they make great defensive donations.
