They have a larger talent pool to pick from and thus a higher likelihood that they have better players with the same base strength. More people to pick from gives you a better likelihood to win every time. Doesn't always work every time but it usually does. Lets equate this to a high school football game . . .
11 players on the field at a time. Pretend they are all seniors so 17-18 years old. All almost identical in size position to position. They still don't let the 1A school compete with the 5A school. The only reason the 5A school will steamroll the smaller school is because they have more people to pick from, learn from, resources to train with, etc. The obvious weight/height/speed numbers being identical between players means didly squat.
Same size team hand picked from a larger group of people has the advantage over a static group of people almost every time.
If we use your analogy, then any world sports event is a totally unfair, because China and India can pick 1 athlete out of a 1 Billion population, where as most countries have less than 100 Million population. That includes Olympics, World Cup, etc etc...I wonder why China didn't win Worldcup yet.
