Hehe, I "lost" my first dragon raid yesterday due to those pesky wizards. My TH7 with level 1 dragons was attacking a TH8. I had it all planned out.
First, Triple lightning the AD deep in the core of the base.
Next, I needed to take out the AD at the top of the base. I dropped the first dragon to take out a barracks, out of range of the AD, but needed to make sure it didn't affect pathing later. I knew the dragon would path to a builder hut in range of the AD. As soon as the AD fired the first rocket, I dropped the second dragon to make sure I could take out the CC troops. CC was behind the AD. Then I dropped my CC full of level 5 balloons to take out the AD. Queue the CC deployment music.
In my mind, that AD was as good as gone, so I moved on to my next target, the AD on the right side of the base, reasonably well protected behind storages and defenses. So dragons were going to get stuck on storages, and balloons were going to get stuck on a wizard tower. Nasty spot.
I sent in 2 dragons to tank the AD. Sent in a scattering of balloons to approach the wizard tower from multiple directions, so they wouldn't get taken out by splash damage. Hmm, that's odd, 1 dragon is already dead. And where are my balloons? Send in another dragon and more balloons... Hmm, they're still dying pretty fast, what's going on? Holy ♥♥♥♥, why is the AD at the top still alive??? That thing was as good as gone?? Wait, are those wizards running around down there? ♥♥♥???
Yeah, I managed to salvage the raid for 1 star, so it wasn't a total loss. But it's the first time I haven't gotten at least 2 stars from my TH7 against a TH8 in a war attack.
In the replay, it was painfully obvious what happened. I had two dragons in play, tanking the AD, but neither was close enough to spring the CC. So the balloons sprang the CC, 5 wizards popped out, took out the balloons in one shot. The AD never hit the balloons, it was still shooting at the dragon. The wizards took out both dragons pretty quickly, 2 or 3 of them survived, as well as the AD, and I was zoomed in far enough that I didn't see any of this during the attack.
Lesson learned, pay more attention to the CC. You can predict the action of defenses, and you can even mentally account for a seeking air mine. But wizards are hit or miss. My dragons usually toast them in 1 or 2 shots. But I forget how fragile balloons can be.
Wouldn't have been an issue at TH7, because I wouldn't have had to divide my attention between two different AD's. TH7 can't survive a dragon attack.
