The future of Clash of Clans

On the brink of a new update, both the leaks and the new sneak peak have left people with mixed feelings :confused:. There's people begging for new features rather than new levels is a more frequent request, which is understandable seeing as clan wars was the most recent game-changing/feature update. Then there's people who are content with the update, but at the same time long for more to-do. We can all agree that Clash of Clans is losing it's appeal.

Let's look at it from Supercell's perspective. Supercell are a business. They don't include advertisements in-game so they have to make their money some how. People are asking for SC to return elixir upgradable walls (for th7/8), though they don't realise that SC lose out on a lot of profit from adding this feature in. It's quite impossible to keep everyone happy, in fairness to SC they do listen to the community, albeit within reason. What I mean by this is that SC have dedicated a sub forum thread for ideas and suggestions for the game, which is great but the problem is everyone has great ideas and SC themselves can't introduce all of them due to their business model. For them, they have to keep the game: pay to win faster.

Unfortunetly if SC don't act now and don't implement features then they could be looking at a loss in the long run. Clash of Clans is a fantastic game but it won't last forever, but it can last a long time if SC start listening to the community a lot more. I'm not talking about adding in the unrealistic and game-breaking features but just something NEW, UNPREDICTABLE AND FUN. Clan wars is growing stale. SC must act now for the future of their game.

It is unknown whether the leak is real or not

Saying Clash is fun but can't last forever is subjective - it certainly could be a 20 year game. Just because something hasn't been done does not mean it cannot be done. New content and tweaks are critical. Often times the smallest things are what make players happiest - custom clan flags? Been wanting this for 2 years! I try to keep an open mind and let the month AFTER an update tell me if I think it's a good update or not.

Should SC drop the business model that has catapulted them to the top of the charts? Of course not. Despite many complaints along the way, SC has obviously done a good job of doing what a business is supposed to do... Make money. At the end of the day, the majority seem to be happy, and I think that's only become more true over time.

As for the levels vs features part, SC is smart enough to know they need both. Take a stroll through the announcement section and look at past release notes, they invariably contain a mix of both. Of course if they see strayed towards relying only on one or the other they'd have issues, but I see no indication they are headed that way.

Exactly. I'm still neutral, but tons and tons of people are believing it.

Nothing last forever. Remember Blackberry? They were so great, a giant incomparable to even Apple and/or Samsung.

Now they're mopping the floor, through arrogance. They refused to follow the trends, demands, requests from customers. That's what they get.

Now Supercell, will they listen to what people what or not? That's up to them to decide.

I think I'm with you on this one LightBeatz, there is nothing in the update list that seems unreasonable or daft, but I also don't know why the healer buff or the x-bow fix aren't on the list.

I am an old player and maxed my defenses since one month. I agree, lately there is nothing to do anymore except doing clan war routine and doing some raid here and there for upgrading walls.

Sometime clan war is fun but sometimes it is frustrating and boring. I can only speak for myself, and I definitely like the idea of new feature instead of new Town Hall 11. I can't imagine I have to farm more gold again while farming at th10 requires a very longg time.

Maybe some weekly event like tournament, challenge or defending against some kind of monsters (raid mode) is better than new troops

My main point is give us something to do, since lately all I have done are raiding for small gold, and routine clan war.

Nothing lasts forever and business is a bubble, it will pop eventually. I agree, the majority seem to be happy, for now. Though that number could decrease. Supercell have obviously done a great job I agree, but doing such a job creates expectations. When people's expectations aren't met, people grow unhappy. Just trying to start a discussion, hope everyone can contribute as it would be interesting to see where the majority stand on this subject.

Yea I've heard that idea of weekly challenges a few times, people seem to really be pushing for it. In my opinion, if they added these quests/challenges it would be another source of resources for everyone which ultimately unbalances the game. Supercell would lose out on money. A th11 would be great for SC's business side of things though it's impractable in-game. I guess we'll see what happens :)

To be fair, you could have made the same argument for leagues and Clan Wars (well, at least for gold). Ultimately SC can't be successful without throwing a few goodies to their customers along the way.

Yea true but I'd say that Clan Wars was in the pipeline from the beginning. Adding more of these features to earn gold may not be on SC's agenda. I think it's vital to add mor goodies on the way. People's expectations have grown a lot bigger since the release of clan wars and IMO SC must adapt to survive.

There will be people who are happy with the update

There will be people who are unhappy with the update and leave
There will be people who are happy with the update and return

Just to clarify this. When I was th8 I would have spent way more gems if I didn't have maxed out elixir almost all the time. I didn't see the point in using gems for barracks/king boosts if I was near 6 million elixir. Now If they make the change to at least allow skull walls for elixir it would have been great for me a couple months ago and I would have spent way more gems.

But I'm th9 with nearly all skulls/legos now so it wouldn't help me at all to make this change. Still its a good idea though.

That's why people have been demanding more features over upgrades. Features are available to everyone but for SC's point of view it's just not viable/possible at this time.

Dropping their current business model is impossible. An organization is built on these principles and if you take them away then it can be catastrophic. I've seen this in many case studies that I've read for management consulting. On another note, the business model must be a sort of pay to advance (fast). This is because supercell has employees and expensive servers. Without revenue the game would not be as good as it is. Server would be slow, updates would take forever.

Boosting is actually more valuable when you have full elixir. The most expensive troops usually take the longest to make so it is more useful to be boosted when you are trying to blow huge amounts of elixir than when you are using a cheap barch setup.

Maybe I was being a bit extreme by saying that they should drop their business model, perhaps I should of said they should adapt it. Things are fast changing, people demands and expectations increase due to its success. They need to keep people happy but in order to do that, they can't continue to add upgrade levels. It has to be game drawing features that draws people to play.

Except not at th8...balloonion sucks at th8. I've done it.

I do understand what you mean but you can get so many barch attacks off when on boosted.

Most of the time when I see a thread like this I skip right by it because 99 times out of 100 it's a big ♥♥♥♥♥ fest that supercell is terrible the update is no good blah blah blah. For whatever reason I stopped to read this one and first off I'd like to say to the op very very nice this took thought and you show an obvious passion for the game we all love👍👍. That said I truly believe that that there is going to come a point for all of us who play CoC that were just tired of it or done with it regardless what supercell does. For me that is gonna take a while and for supercell to prolong the inevitable they need to add things to keep long time players interested. I'm in a nonstop war clan the founder/leader of the clan just "retired" from the game we currently have 137 war wins a handful of losses clan wars was obviously his passion for the game. He was a max defense th10 working on zap walls and he just flat out got bored and lost his passion for the game. Upon leaving he told all of us that if supercell comes up with something new he'll come back. My fear is without action by supercell this is going to happen more and more...

I definitely agree with you there. Business's have the potential to outgrow their current business model and evolve into a better one. And at the rate that SC has grown, they may have to evolve. There are just certain features that would cut into their profit structure too much at this point in time. Of course, this may change as the game develops. I do feel like SC will implement more features into the game but they ill also have to alternate with upgrade levels due to players that have maxed their bases already.

Saying it cannt last forever is in no way subjective. To retort that it could last 20 years is optimistic, bur no where near forever. Forever is a very tangible term meaning until the end of time, has nothing to do with perceptions of a long period of time.

That's why adding universal contents like Quests or Daily Challenges are preferred choices.
