Now, if the reverse is true (double HP + half DPS), then the Barbarians could survive a few shots from the mortar, and within that time manage to deal some damage to a building. So, in this case, the doubled HP would be better.
Now, the double HP + halved DPS concept also wouldn't changed anything. Let's say we have a wizard, that, without anything, deals 100dps and has 50 health. There is also an archer tower that deals 25 dps. With the double dps + half the Hitpoints, then the wizard might be lucky enough to be able to get 1 shot on a building before it goes down, dealing 300 damage, because wizards fire every 1.5 seconds. But, if the double Hitpoints + half the DPS is true, then the archer tower will take 4 seconds to kill the wizard, and the wizard will be able to get 2-3 shots on a building, dealing 150-225 damage, which isn't the same.
