As early as you possibly can.
Sure it's a pain. But once they are done you never have to think about losing a barracks again (and it's a good feeling).
You missed out on a great opportunity last week. I only have one barracks left to upgrade and Im going to upgrade it in two weeks when I upgrade my townall and take a break from the game.
exclusively farming?
you don't really need dragons and pekka for farming, healer can be used, so IF you're exclusively farming, you can just let them get stuck at lvl8
but if not, max them as soon as possible, there was a time when I only have 2 barracks available at a time, as the other 2 are being upgraded, it's a pain in the A, but at least it's already dealt with, and I don't have to worry maxing them later on
From TH1-5, upgrade them whenever. The first 5 THs, the barracks are quick to upgrade or the upgrades are cheap to farm.
For TH6 going forward, I upgraded during 1 gem Barrack boost events over the winter. I upgraded 2 barracks, while the other 2 were boosted for a gem.
If there are no 1-gem specials, I use the Dark Barracks for BAM raids.
I did my upgrades towards the end of the TH cycle. I managed most of TH7 on 2 drag barracks, and towards the end while I was waiting on TH to complete, I did the other two. At TH8, I did one Pekka barrack quite early and another a while after that. Will probably do one more Pekka barrack for quicker GoWiPe at TH9.
In General, if you war a lot while farming at the same time, its good to try and get the barracks done one at a time when you can. Doing more than one at once though seems to badly affect farming, from what I have seen.
I usually start the upgrade on Sunday night before bed as I play less during the week so don't miss it as much, and I only upgrade one at a time.
Best time is during a boost event....lets you keep raiding with some semblance of normalcy.
Early as possible! I love having maxed barracks. But I think the boost event is a great suggestion if you can wait for it
They should be one of your first upgrades as a new town hall. Get them outta the way. The only other time is really when you a 7+ day shield or when loot is really dry for a while. Otherwise, you can do it whenever, but it will be a huge pain. Do it during your noob days when you're not as addicted, so the pain won't be as bad. It's almost like being a premmie (I think) except it only lasts a few days. Barracks to 10 were one of my first elixir upgrades at TH8, helped so much.
