There are hundreds that have done it. Lavas are the hardest as your defense suffers terribly while they are down.
You don't need to gem for buildings or defenses. But I would say it would be heroes, hands down since you need them for war, but you need to upgrade them.Quote:

I'd say heroes, and it is definately possible without gems.
Im not max th10 but im pretty far into the game (max infernos and xbows for example) and besides 2 extra builder huts in the beginning I have never bought gems

Heros are the worst with the down time while they upgrade. You take a hit offensively and defensively. I am far behind on upgrading my heros because I do not buy gems, and cannot stand to be without them. I try to plan upgrades around war times, and around when I have received gems from achievements, to help ease the pain.
The spell factory is right there with them, but has less upgrades so is less of a terror in general to upgrade. Heros have a gazillion upgrades to be done, and thus are by far more impact than a factory upgrade.
Barracks are not fun either, but as long as you do not do all of them at once, you are only suffering a slightly slower army build.
