I don't like my heroes that I have poured 100s of thousands of dark elixir into get killed by 20 barbs and archers,
Let them sleep. People that are calling others idiots for not having them guard your village 24/7, people have their own preferences, allow them to play their game without criticism.
Sleep when logging off briefly with TH protected when I'm going to come back to raid again in a few minutes.
Guard when putting TH outside and logging off for the night.

Depends for me. If I have to close he app for 5 minutes but want to keep raiding, I'll put them to sleep. But all other times, they guard.
Queen stands next to my de storage and my king sleeps on the outer edge of my walls. I've been sniped every time for 3 months straight now. So it doesn't really matter
I put them on guard, because when I put the phone down I intend to have a break. So don't care if they heroes get KO'd.
The only times I put them to sleep are when I am prepping for a war attack and don't have a shield.
I really wish you could put CC troops to sleep as well. Has that been ruled out? That's a good idea...
always leave mine on sleep mode so that i can use them when i want to
