While looking for only high gold bases is a good tactic when trying to farm walls as a TH8, it's an outdated tactic. You are slowing down your progress by consciously ignoring high overall loot bases in favor of one resource.
If elixir for walls never came to fruition, this would be fine, as you quickly lose the need for elixir at every TH level. But because TH9 now has a demand for 1B in either resource in walls alone, the fact that you are forgoing higher overall loots in favor of only gold loots absolutely hampers your overall progression. That's why the elixir for walls system is broken. It allows a specific TH level to exploit the flaw in it and creates this golden TH where simply moving up suddenly opens up a limitless value for both resources, where there is a hard (and not to mention low) ceiling for one of the two main resources at TH8.

Until he gets lvl 6 troops. Barb/Archers/Giants will be done in the first month, and although I recommend doing Giants first, he could have Barch troops ready after the first 3 weeks. Then he can continue to Barch with ease. He'll also have his AQ, and while she is in no way required to level most TH8 bases, her presence gives an undeniably large advantage to farming. She also stays alive much easier than the BK, as her range allows the farming troops to take the hits first before defenses begin to target her. This leads to her being available for almost every raid. Again, she is not an absolute requirement for farming gold/elixir from TH8s though.
EDIT: I meant to add-in that at TH9, you can effectively GiBarch with the 220 camp space, which gives incredible versatility in hitting dead bases using only your barch troops, or the option to crack into these maxed TH8 bases for stacked storages (which TH8s would not be able to do against other TH8s, without the use of basically their entire spell/army aresnal).
I can confidently say that the gold/elixir farming at TH8 suffers at most a 15% dropoff at TH9, after the offensive upgrades are taken care of (again, this can be completed in the first month, and I'm sure there are people who did it significantly faster than me).
You brought up some decent points, but unfortunately some of them are outdated, or exaggerated. But at least it's a better perspective than these kids popping on here with their one-liner "stay, loot hard at TH9" or "stay, get hit for more by TH10s" garbage, lol.
