When you are bored at TH9. You will not get owned just because your def are low and you will not be able to farm faster because you have 1/2 lava walls or whatever.
When you have absolutely nothing left to do at TH9...going before will ultimately mean you complete TH10 slower than someone who waited...
Why??
Because the loot penalty bites...hard...
I'm glad I waited...
But have been bored of TH10 for a long time. I cant imagine grinding L9 walls here...let alone upgrades that I could have done at TH9...
Long one short, TH10 is pushing TH...it is not a farming TH. If you like farming, max out TH9 first or you will probably regret it. (If your goal for farming is to max as quickly as possible, then do so at a TH that does not carry as much of a penalty)
Tbh it's down to personal preference - I was in the same situation as you, planning to do all legos. I managed to complete half of them and then upgraded my TH. I thought I may as well keep my builders busy while I tend to my legos. It may be a slower route for upgrading your walls but at least you'll have your defences busy at the same time. I'm currently on 165/250 legos complete and 4 builders constantly working on maxing my defences.
The initial first week or so might be slow due to getting your new defences up to the same level as your current defences but after that t's easy. You should stay in Gold 1/Crystal 3 for loot. Don't listen to the people complaining about bad loot at TH10 - They probably just aren't that good at the game..
Actually "always max" is a terrible approach to every single TH except TH9. Those players who parrot that ♥♥♥♥ don't have a clue of what they're talking about.
At the point you're at, it's all about walls. How invested are you in completing these walls at a fast progression? B/c while you probably experienced that there was hardly a hiccup in farming gold/elixir as a TH9 compared to TH8, there is a very real dropoff from TH9 to TH10. If you don't place as much value in walls, and would rather get those lvl 7 troops and TH10 level offense, head on up. But unlike every single TH before TH9, this is the one where you have to actually sit down and figure out what you value more, as there are actual repercussions in some aspects for moving up to go along with the benefits, whereas it's a no-brainer for TH8 and below.
I guess I should ask what level your heroes are. A lot of people say to have them at lvl 20/20 before moving up, b/c you want to use them to help you farm as a TH10. This might be a good idea, as you have constant gold/elixir dumps you can do with lego/lava walls, and your hero progression will obviously be getting work on. The only real negative I see is that you'll have at least 3 of your 5 builders constantly idle. If the waste of base progression bothers you enough and you are ok with whatever your heroes are at, then moving to TH10 might be for you.
"always max everything before upgrading town hall" I say this because the loot penalty is in effect. town hall 10 attacks me with just their queen to snipe my town hall, they only get 50 gold and elixir each for my town hall. It should offer 1000 each. this means they are only getting 1/20th (5%) of what i really have to offer since i am town hall 5. This goes with what I have read. In theory it will be the same when I go to town hall 6 and they can still only take 5% from me, but the town hall still giving only 50 of each the storage will be able to give twice as much up to the max 200,000 since i will be able to hold more when they are upgraded. So instead of 20k max a th10 can take from me it will be 40k, because I just have more.
This is the same you would get from me with your th9. But you can get ALL from th9 and 10.
Right now at th9, you can only take 90% or some from a th8. Moving to th10, mean you will only get 90% of the loot you could have got from a th9 because it is one town hall level lower than you. You will see a LOT less loot after you move up in town halls. So you have a bit more loot you can get from lower players right now, so why not use it to your advantage and stay at th9 for as long as you need to?
If you move up to town hall 10 before you finish th9, then you will have less loot you can gain from ALL players and have al the extra cost of those upgrades, walls you left behidn at th9 in addition to the extra millions of thing to upgrade at th10 like inferno towers that aren't cheap from the looks of it, $1mil walls, and everything else.
This goes for all town hall levels, and is the reason that you really sure upgrade town hall after everything else, unless you are just in the butter-zone of good loot.
Here is my math figure on which levels each town hall shouldn't bother attacking unless they can just farm them otherwise the troop cost for anything other than barch will mean you spend more than you gain. It is just MY math, not confirmed in the game but based solely on my observations during this month I have been playing the game:
10 shouldn't bother with 7 and under
9 shouldn't bother with 6 and under
8 shouldn't bother with 5 and under
7 shouldn't bother with 4 and under
under town hall 7, attack anyone since you probably won't want to wast your time at town hall 6 finding town hall 3 to attack and they either still have a shield since they just began, or have quit and someone else has already attacked them and probably given them a shield anyway, so if you find them it is real cheap but not really going to gain you anything from attacking them except achievements for mortars, wins, town halls, walls, builders huts, etc.
I am hoping this math holds true, though i do get attacked by th10 all the time because the bonus loot is too good for them to pass up in addition to my measly 20k resources, but I knew that was a risk when I went to champs and was willing to take it all for the sake of getting my 5th builder.
I would say anyone at th5 and up should max everything BEFORE upgrading town hall, because after that is where the real fight begins if unless you go sub200 where it seems to be all weirdness and craziness, or like me, climb so high just to use the loot penalty and protection form not having anyone that can take everything from you.
EDIT: I actually think the town hall should never have a penalty, and understand why the storages exist and the town hall has storage ability, but it might need to be increased and the penalty factor removed from town halls so ANYONE can take EVERYTHING from a town hall because it is a building worth a star itself. Each level the town hall can store more, and there is no penalty for attacking it, so you risk losing more. What purpose does having that 1,000 always follow you wherever you go after you have storage as it is? Just to give people some loot formt he town hall, but it isn't worth its real value as it is. it would also make taking the town hall for that 50% that more interesting to get more than just 1000 loot from it. But this is another topic in itself only slightly related to whether you should max or premmie your town hall.
If you war then upgrade:
- When you can consistently 3 star a strong to maxed TH9, (the mentality that you will be able to do this once you hit TH10 is weak, because you will be facing TH10s when you are TH10.)
- When your walls are at a level where maxed pekkas and high level heroes can't get through them easily
If you are a farmer:
- Once you max everything (the loot penalties will affect your overall farming effectiveness so why kneecap your efficiency early on?)
- If you are a really good farmer finishing off the lavas and grinding heroes should be a good challenge to set yourself.
If you are a trophy hunter:
- Upgrade whenever you feel can effectively progress through cups at a pace which is acceptable to you. The fact that there are many Th3-7's up in champs pretty much proves you don't need a maxed out base to reach there, just a lot of time and persistence.
The correct ansywer, imo, would be whenever you have nothing left to do at 9 except heroes and maybe some walls. I had walls at 60% lava when I advanced.
However, I think if you can get your defenses close to max, even if not all and you have your walls to at least lvl 8 and hereos 10+ I think you will still make a tough TH 10.
Never advance a townhall if you dont have any of these maxed: lab, walls, heroes defense.
If you have at least one of those or your account is a donating account you could advance for the right reason.
If you love warring you really should max your heroes before going.
Many people have defenses maxed first. Stay if ur endgame goal is to max everything. Advance if u are a casual player or u get bored doing the wall/hero grind. (Set a goal before advancing. X amount.of walls heroes and reassess staying or advancing)
If you are a heavy farmer you may have maxed your walls and/or heros before defenses. Advance as you will waste resources working on defenses only. If heros done before walls, staying is optional, if walls done i would advance.
