I have concentrated on ploughing my DE into troop upgrades and neglected my heroes as a result. My king and queen are each only level 10, but I do have max golems, hogs, minions, witches and am currently working on valks.
My clanmates tend to work the opposite way, and I wonder if my approach is detrimental to my gameplay? Thoughts?
I'm a pretty well developed TH10 and use gowipe for war, otherwise normal elixir troops for non-war battling.
Are you TH9 or TH10? I was able to research DE troops and collect enough for hero upgrades at the same time. Personally, I would stop upgrading valks and direct that DE towards heroes. I have Minions 4, Hogs 4, Golem 4, and Witch 2. My king just hit 15, and queen is 13.
tldr - upgrade your heroes.

I never use DE troops as they just don't suit my style of attacking so instead whenever I get DE I spend it on my King and Queen.

Kind of depends on if you stick to a small variety of compositions....personally I did heroes to ten then finished most of the dark upgrades minus the golem and hounds...did another 5 levels of heroes, then finished off the last 2 troops. Now working lavas and all dark goes to heroes, with both currently at 16. I tend to play around with different armies so for me having max available is always nice. This is speaking for my 9, but for the most part same situation with my ten.
I am doing both at once because I am worried supercell will adjust game play causing me to need another troop comp for war again. Hounds are going up to lev2 and Queen is going to lev9. I did golems first for gowipe which I regularly use. Hogs I did a long time ago and are one of the reasons for my fears, for example.
I will say this: since maxing my queen farming has been 1000x easier and I would hate to go back. Now I realize that maxed heroes aren't really accessible for everyone, but even a queen at lvl 20 or 30 is a HUGE help.
As for the king? Next to worthless for farming. Basically an overpowered giant.
What I always like to say: It's your choice and totally up to you. I have to say tho, if you put it into troops then it makes it "that" (not sure how much that may be) easier to get DE, although it does make your troops slightly more expensive. If you put it into heros; damage increases, HP increases, and Hidden Power increases
But if just one, I'd always vote heroes.
You can use them with ANY comp, push,war, or farm.
Split them equally, if you can upgrade both a hero and a DE troop at once, then awesome. If not, try to look at what you use more. I.e, if you use a barbarian king more than a minion, upgrade the barbarian king. :)
