I saw many people use it till the end when hero's health hits the red line. Some use it when health is around 1/4 gone and the ability helps to recover health and summons troops to ease damages under heavy fire when hero is in the core area.......
I understand it is based on situation and base layout but just in general when do you get the most bang for the buck?
I rage the King if he has a ton of Barbarians around him (when barching)
Otherwise I activate my heroes abilities when they are in the orange or going to be destroying a key defense or TH.
One of my biggest pet peeves is the number of people I see dropping the royals and activating ability when they are doing nothing useful and haven't taken any damage.
Depends on whats going on but usually somewhere south of half health preferably with other barbs around.
Usually drop him behind a big wall, Giants or Golemns, and when I'm nearing 50%, I hit him into high gear!
Then Queeny is right behind to get TH!
I use it when:
No giant bombs nearby
No splash towers attacking
(these will kill your spawned troops)
heroes are low health
OR when i have a lot of barbarians around king and need to break through fast

Their ability is to provide more DPS, spawn units for distractions, and regain health. Dropping them instantly nulls all of those.
But for me, it depends on the base. When barching, it's nice to have quite a few barbs around the king when he uses his, but it's not vital for me. I usually use them at about 1/4 health

^^ this is so true i hate it.
I use it when theyre in the core, by that time theyre usually in the orange.
I use it if He's the only one left and its gettin close to 50%. The Rage and the heal get him back on his feet faster.
I used his ability once to bypass the heal time altogether. Never been able to replicate the results :p
When dropping trophies, I use BK to kill a mine or collector then use ability and immediately surrender. Usually results in zero or 20 secs heal time, so I can immediately repeat. ;)
as you rightfully said...its based on the situation...most of the time you'd be under heavy fire when at the core due to tons of surrounding defenses targeting on your troops...however...not all the time it will mean that use of the heroe's ability is necessary at that point....
I usually use my King's ability at the core regardless of how much health he has lost just to make him destroy things faster and clear the queen from danger...
My Queen's ability is very crucial to me so I only use it when strong defenses are targeting her causing massive drainage of her health...
I rage my king when he has half health left and when there is no wizard tower in range so my summoned barbs don't die fast.
I only have a level 2 king, so I'd say never.
For King, I wait until he's at 3/4 to 1/2 health before triggering his ability and I try to time it when there are other barbs near by. You use his ability not for damage but to heal him up and make him a better tank.
Archer- Generally speaking only use this ability if she takes some aggro, but let her take a little damage first at least. I try to time the ability when there's a tank (gollem or giant) close enough by to take the aggro from what ever is hitting her when I trigger the ability. I've let her get as low as 10% before just because I knew a gollem was very close to getting in range for when I trigger he ability.
Exception for Archer Queen, if she's targeting a powerful defense like inferno tower or xbow I will sometimes trigger her ability even if she's at full health. The only good inferno tower is a dead one.
Everyone here is telling you to activate hero ability when they are low on health. Well, it is only half the truth. Many times it is better to activate when your hero is at full health. Just check this Daddy video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCpd1tfMDho) and you see at 2:10 how he activates his King while it is practically full health to take advantage of the rage effect on the existing barbs. Had he waited til the king was at 50% health or less all of his barbs would have been dead and he would have not got all that loot he did activating early. Activating the King too late and losing the edge is well demonstrated in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtPuL10pP9Q) at 3:30. All the barbs are dead when king activates and CC troops win. Had the King been activated early when barbs were still alive the CC might have been beaten in time to save the raid.
THis also applies to queen because sometimes it is better to activate early at full health to protect your other troops by destroying that wiz tower or cannon that is mowing down your troops.
So, do it before it is too late! ;)

I am a maxed Th10, taking on heavy bases... well mainly infernos.
Obviously when my king gets below 1/2 health or more I will hit the button. No use letting him die before he can use the ability.
But...
1) If I got my full force in the core and I am locking it down with freeze. Especially if he's at 3/4 HP - I often trigger the ability to distract the infernos or to quickly eliminate the CC. If its the CC I make sure to wait until the king is engaged, so that the random spawn also produces random targets. This is particularly true if I got a heal spell handy. I will do it at full HP too, but I definitely won't wait if he has hp to gain back.
2) Say I am steam rolling a base and my king has solid HP (more than half). I will then either try and time the ability to get him through a stubborn wall or while he's attacking a section of the base free of splash damage. This is more to keep the momentum going when aiming for 3 stars
My queen is different.
1) If I am hitting a tough core and I have packed it with my units, I might trigger her ability to maximize the damage I can do with freezes activated and my rage spell running full steam. This is particularly true if either I have the splash on lock down or I am outta range (so I don't lose all the archers to 1 wizard tower/mortar shell.
2) If I have locked on to the TH and its not looking like I have other units doing the same. Basically, quick destroy the TH before defenses have time to lock on to the queen.
3) Queen is taking heavy fire and a golem or other tanking units are near by. Great way to redirect the flow of DPS
4) If splash damage is down or firmly occupied I will also often trigger the ability. Similar to 2 for the king, its to keep the momentum going. I have her ability handy waaaaay more than the king though.

I will activate it either when the hero is at the point where the regen won't be wasted from health being full or when they need some extra power in the core of a base or vs enemy heros.
It depends on a lot of factors to be honest.
I try to keep my hero use to the minimum while farming for gold or elixir. If i do use them i just them to get 50% or a storage. Activate the ability if they lose any health.
Warring is a completely different story. If the raid is going as i planned, then i hold my abilities till i really need them. I use my rage and heal in the core while heroes are there to help them boost. Usually with this i get to use the abilities in the complete end to secure a 3 star. Most of the times i have gotten 3 stars just because i used the abilities properly.
There are times when you can tell that ur troops are being stalled by the cc and you dont enough wizards or skeletons to help u. Thats when i activate the kings abilities for the barbs. I still hold the queens ability till i really need it. Like if she is being targetted, and i was redirect the dps somewhere else.
It really depends on the situation and I think the replies before me covered the war. In farming I try to use the king as little as possible and if I do, I try to use the health from ability in a way that will provide me with less recovery time so it is ready for next attack. So sometimes I might active it right away, because I know the battle will end very soon.
