As someone that has successfully done so many revenge attacks, half the people on the list are used, I can say that idea isn't needed.
You can't revenge every target and expect a full return. I have revenge targets that are easy to raid in return, but never really have enough loot to make any strike worth it. However, I have had some nice bases that had so much loot, it hit the loot able cap, so I saw many 250k-300k gold and elixir results. But raiding bases with that much loot also requires a sizable army, since it is usually a farming base with strong defences. It's unrealistic to recover your lost elixir, since it takes elixir to get elixir back.
So I revenge back for the recovery and gathering of dark elixir, with Gold gained as a nice bonus, and elixir gained as a way to make up the cost of the dragon army used to raid them. The loss of Dark Elixir, and being 3 starred by a TH7 as a TH8, is by far stronger blow than what they could ever do to me.
You also have to take into account, I'm active enough to get gold and elixir almost whenever, and the loss isn't a big deal. Dark Elixir is a different story, and so I would be annoyed by the loss of it. Thankfully, the loot able percentage on the storage is half of that of gold and elixir storages, and limits the loss greatly.Still, when so close to getting a high amount of Dark Elixir for buying something, and lossing 6-8% of that from a raid, that is one step backwards I rather I didn't have to makeup for.
