I am sick and tired of using gems to boost spells, heroes etc so that I can get enough attacks in to offset the defense losses. The question is can you compete with the top players without buying gems.

yes, there are very low TH players sniping at very high cups, you just need insane amounts of patience.
To beat the high level players you will need gems due to build times/cups won vs what you will lose when you log off.
Better questions would be:
how high can you climb without buying gems and without boosting?
Assuming you are TH10 with troops maxed. Can you cross 4000 trophies?
How high can TH9 max climb?
Can TH8 max get to Champion League?
You can, I'm an example, but it takes much more time. Plus you have to think & strategize a bit better but it can be done!

Yes. Hitting the global leaderboard would be quite tough, but the game gives you plenty of free gems and getting over 4000 without buying is very doable.
Just do the basic math. Two guys invest the same amount of time into the game averaging the same win ratio but one of them has troops that train 4 times faster. Which of them will arrive at the train station first?
But it's not expensive to boost at all. I am definitely going to play harder when I am maxed...
You would have had to start over 2 years ago to compete at top level. However if you max town as you go from TH to TH you can compete at the highest level for your TH.
