I can't speak to other TH levels as I've not yet witnessed the effectiveness of X-Bows or Inferno Towers against this type of attack since nobody in my clan has reached TH 9 yet, but I would imagine that they help at least a little. However, that's beside my point.
How about instead of weakening dragons or changing their behavior, as suggested elsewhere, make a tweak to the air defense to have a "favorite target" and/or do additional damage to dragons (maybe 1.2x or 1.5x, like the big bomb does against Hogs)? This would certainly help give some of us little guys a fighting chance during a war and help cut down on the dragon spam. It's a relatively simple, yet profound, change that wouldn't necessarily be game-breaking IMO. Besides, in most fantasy lore, weren't these types of defenses specifically made to defend against dragons? Plus, there's the Lava Hound for higher TH levels that hunt down air defenses so it's not like there's no recourse for those folks when there are more aerial-type defenses to deal with, right? It would make that unit, and maybe balloons, even more valuable. I didn't see this in the post of ruled-out ideas, or any that were previously suggested so apologies if I somehow missed it if this is a duplicate idea.
While I suppose that some strategy might be involved in dragon attacks, it is very little compared to other types of attacking armies. This would then force people who want to mindlessly throw a mass amount of wyrms down someone's throat think and plan their attack a little more carefully. No offense meant to those of you who like to use it, but it's really a pretty "cheap" (not elixir-wise) Tonka tactic that is not that hard to employ. If you have the elixir to spend, then by all means go for it, but there really needs to be some balance to level the field here. This would also probably make lightning spells more valuable in war for those types of attackers without access to the Hound, instead of just toting a bunch of rage spells to drop on a horde of these flying terrors to quickly mow-down a formidable TH 7 or 8 war base in flames.
All I'm asking for is a sharper knife to help cut this block of cheese; I don't want it pre-sliced.:p
EDIT: Credit to my clan-mate, Battleshade, for suggesting the basis for this idea.
