Helpful Base Design Tips
Hey guys, my name is Steve and I am from Propus, a Minecraft and Clash of Clans group that posts daily content. Today, I've created a guide to help with making a better base design. My purpose is to give some examples of what not to do when making your base. I hope you enjoy this guide!
As I walk you through the guide, we will highlight the huge mistakes a typical Clash of Clans player will make. We will call our typical clasher "Average Guy."
The first major mistake that Average Guy will make while designing his base is adding a ring of walls around his town hall without anything next to it, as shown (slightly exaggerated to prove my point):

The reason this will never work is because there are no important defenses surrounding the town hall! Unless Average Guy wass looking to design a trolling base or was looking to design something to mess with attacker, this would never work. Average Guy will not be happy in the morning when he wakes up to see the 2 and 3 star raid on his base.
Instead, he should try spreading defenses around the town hall, as so (again, the wizard towers are exaggerated):http://i.imgur.com/mtuTQvT.jpg
This has already improved his base more than he would think. If Average Guy wanted to put the clan caste and/or dark elixir storage in the center where the wizard towers are, that would be fine as long as at least 2 defenses were also in the center. Another quick tip: NEVER replace the town hall for the laboratory. Use farming bases!
The third thing that Average Guy regrets doing with his base is creating a square base design. Not only will wallbreakers have a field day on his base, but his base could be wiped out by a lower town hall in just a matter of seconds, especially when he tries cramming in all of his storages near the center compartment of his base (exaggerated once again):

Because Average Guy does not have any important defenses in the center, his base would be 3 starred in about 90 seconds. If he did have important defenses near the center of his base, it would be 3 starred at leas 60-70% of the time anyways. Instead of taking the square base approach, he should consider creating a symmetrical base with up to a maximum of 4 buildings in each compartment.
The last two big mistakes that Average Guy is still guilty of are designing double-wall layouts and placing identical buildings right next to each other, as shown (still exaggerated):

Average Guy should be shamed to let this happened! And he certainly is. Ladies and gentlemen, double walls no longer work as of June of 2013 when the wallbreakers received greater splash damage. This anachronistic strategy would no longer work for Average Guy, or anyone! We emphasize that you NOT use double walls, EVER. :p
Average Guy should also be disappointed over the fact that all of his resources are in the center, where defenses should be! He needs to rethink his strategies when a giant/healer combo walks in and smashes a wave of defenses all lined up in a row, as well as a horde of goblins racing to the storages to easily take them down. How would they be destroyed when there are no defenses to take them down anyways?
Unfortunately enough, part of Average Guy is in all of us. The only way we can prevent our inner Average Guy is by being able to locate these simple mistakes and fix them. As long as you follow this guide while making your base, you will be able to sleep better at night knowing your base is a step ahead of Average Guy's base.
Alright guys, I hope this guide helped you out. Please comment if you would like me to post more of these guides regularly. As of right now, I'll see you guys later. Propus out! :D
