Yeah, level 1-2 are pretty useless. Like balloon/hogs below L5.
2x L3 at TH8 is 'ok' for that level.
2x L6 at TH9 is quite good.
3x L6 at TH10 is awesome!
In my mini account that doesn't attack and live off collectors/mines/drill , my King is 8 and Queen is 11, this is DE alone.
Of course the 7x L12 collectors generate a lot of elixir for the DE drill upgrade.

as everyone else have said, 1 ♥♥♥♥ty lvl 1 drill dosnt do u much good. But when u get 2 (th9) going at max thats 200 dark elixir pr hour
Lets do the math here.. because CoC is not a sprinting game, its a marathon, if your gonna play it, your gonna play it for a looong time.. so lets crunch some numbers.. with 2 max drills u got 200de pr hour
1 week = 24h*200de*7days = 33600 DE, so in 1 week, you got 33,6K de..
Lets crunch some more numbers, in 1 month you got: 33,6K de*4 weeks = 134.400 DE(now i dont know about u, but that helps alot.
If you only got 1 max de drill thats half of the numbers i just gave u.
Lets say u got 3 max drills (th10) in 1 month thats: 201.600 DE
Yeah, it is seriously one of the best buildings in the game. I would get it to max asap.
