I have two TH8 victories under my belt that are particularly informative on how effective dragons are.
I have level 2 dragons, level 4 lightning spells, and level 2 rage spells.
One otherwise well built TH8 base had all three Air Defense buildings down for upgrade. I raided them with 8 dragons, and no spells, and it was actually a close fight. From leveled up archer towers, Tesla towers, seeking air mines, and to a lesser degree wizard towers, about half the dragons were downed, and many suffered more than moderate damage.
The second TH8 was a well built farming base that had 3 level 5 Air Defenses, and in a well defended spot near the center, with storages blocking them. Normally, with just a lightning strike on one Air Defense, I wouldn't have much hope for winning much loot, even with 11 dragons. So, I tested out a plan with three rage spells. It worked, barely. I deployed my 10 dragons in an arc, and hit them with two rages to close the gap when the A.D. fired, and one more to close faster on one side. I almost got the last one on the other side, but it took out the two nearby attacking dragons on that side. Called in my CC dragon and took it out before it could do any major damage to the other dragons wandering around. I managed to 3 star this base as a result. :)
Now, these were not the tactless dump troops down and win. I purposefully limited and placed the dragons on the first attack, since this was a loot raid; and I had to plan carefully on a new strategy to try to attack a base I never would have otherwise with my old plans before. There is another TH8 base I want to go after, but they have thier Air Defenses in a spread out manner that I'm unsure of what direction to attack. Would be good practice for war

Now what does this mean, to have a TH7 take out a well built mid TH8? Well, could say that dragons are overpowered, since that you can, with planning, take out a well built base one level higher than you. A TH6 as you know cannot do the same to a TH7. I say it has to do with the way the air defenses and other air support defences work. It is just planned wrong, in terms of game balance. The weak air protection from archer towers, Tesla towers, and wizard towers are basically patched up by a specialized, super strong, building just for that purpose, and nothing else. This oversimplifies things to "take out the air defense to win" strategies. This is why zapping a TH6's or one of TH7's 'Air Defense' will result in an easy win with dragons. It isn't the dragons that are the issue, it is the air protection that bases have, that is the problem. They are suffering from simplistic tactics you would normally see in lower town hall levels from having so few buildings. We are talking about TH7 thru TH 8 or 9 here. There are 10 levels of Town Halls (with increasing upgrade times), so you do the math of how far in-game that is.
