Wise words as always, Cricks :) I bolded what I thought was the wisest of the wisdom
I'm having a chill pill and attending the gnome pool party on my farm -- anyone want to join me? Come on over :)

I would very much like Nick (or anyone with actual knowledge) to step up to the podium and explain why it is taking so long to fix the profanity filter. I for one am heartily sick of being forced to see profanities in innocent conversations due to the filter's agressive censoring. No one seems to take any notice of the Profanity Oddities thread in the Neighbourhood forum. What is the point of it if nothing ever gets fixed? I'm sorry, but I really don't want to have swear words thrust in my face all the time by this filter.
It has been updated multiple times and continues to get updated. It's a massive undertaking and something that needs to incorporate several languages. So something that's filtered out may make no sense in English but could be an inappropriate or insulting term in Spanish, Dutch, etc It may even not be a necessarily nasty term but a politically incorrect term, which, as stupid as it may sound to some, can be very offensive to many.
Remember, this is a program, not a human. It can't think "hey, look at the rest of this sentence...in context, this group of letters can't be what I think it is so I'll let it pass". No, it's a program that can only recognize letter combinations that ARE offensive in the proper context and it's those contexts that it's programmed to prevent. While there may be somewhere out there a highly advanced enough AI that can recognize context, it's not something that's currently available to the average game developer.
Since this is a global game played in multiple languages, we're always going to have this problem. It may be inconvenient and not perfect but the only current alternative is to eliminate it completely and it's better to have it as it is than not have it at all. It's frustrating but if one changes the reaction to it, it's easier to deal with. In my NH, we tend to make jokes and fun with each other when someone posts an innocent X'd out word or term. Lightens the mood, makes an annoying situation easy to bare, increases chat and humor, and makes for a better NH in my opinion. Tolerance of all situations makes for a better NH all around. :)
SC DOES still monitor the Profanity Oddities thread. If users choose not to update it, then that's out of SC's control.
Cricks, we have been making a joke of it, but there comes a point when the joke becomes stale. Why can't it at least recognise the language being used and stop filtering for words in completely different languages? Why is it looking for Mexican, Bosnian and who knows what words in an English conversation? I am sure users of other languages feel the same about having foreign swear words censored of which they have absolutely no previous knowledge and do not relate to the language they are using. The profanity filter is drawing attention to swear words, not eliminating them!
if the thread is being constantly reviewed and the filter amended, why are words like change and chance still being filtered? I have asked that these be fixed several times.
That's how it was developed GM. The developers would have to change the code to your specs and re-release.
Sure there are some selectable toggles SC can use but not to the degree that would satisfy you or anyone else looking for it to work in such great detail i.e. functioning how it wasn't designed to function.
Sure there may be a program out there that executes as you wish. They'd have to deploy resources to find it, test it, buy it, install it, etc. Probably not gonna happen.
I am curious to know the convos that your NH is having. I can't remember the last time my NH was filtered.
"thx much snoopy" filters to "thx muc****oopy". Apparently HSN is bad. I'm "snoopy", so this gets me a lot. I'm not sure "thx much" is what was said, but any word ending in "h".
No, wait, the best is "pickaxe" frequently filters to "*****xe". Can't even use an in-game product name. Although sometimes it filters, sometimes it doesn't.
It's amazing how many things HayDay teaches us by filtering so that we then look up on urbandictionary.com.
No I don't expect it to change. And I don't really find the system that bad: it's laughable but serviceable. It's not like anybody is trying to have meaningful social discussions in the NH chat. Having keyboard editing working would be far more useful to a meaningful conversation than fixing the lame censor.
The disingenuous attempts at technical excuses offered here are frustrating, though, but maybe that's because I have enough background to know better. Actually, the futility of the censor is a bit frustrating at times: start up Clash of Clans and just watch the global chat for a few minutes. Lots of potty mouth kids on there who manage to communicate their foul language quite well in spite of any censor.
Holidae, I have posted many of the conversation snippets that have been filtered in the Profantiies thread in the Neighbourhood sub- forum, as have others who have been upset by what the filter is revealing in innocent conversations. I assure you, our conversations are squeaky clean until the filter gets involved.
Let's take a step back, please, and put things in perspective. The original OP of this thread was about something that hindered the way many played the game, made things unbalanced, or were bugs. Same with the post that revived it a week ago. Yet, here we are arguing about the word filter...something, that while annoying and perhaps upsetting to those who don't understand it's faults and think they're being misunderstood, it's NOT something that hinders the game, the way folks play, makes things unbalanced, or is a bug.
Nick has a slew of responsibilities besides being coordinator between us and the developers. As much as he would like to address every single disturbance in the game, he can not. His time and energies MUST be given to those things which have the biggest impact on the most players, which would be the topics in the OP and the revival OP...things that have big impacts on the game for a large amount of players (and, in case no one has noticed, exactly those things are being revised).
The chat filter is not one of these issue types, so as disappointing as it may be, it's something that's just going to have to continue to be tolerated with patience as it continues to get tweaked in increments. I'm sorry if the technical explanations given are not satisfactory, but that's the only information available to pass on. Those who are tech savvy need to remember that just because software exists to do a better job, doesn't mean that SC has that software or that it would properly integrate with their other software if they did try it. The technical aspects of one type of program or even one type of game does not mean that they are all alike. As such, what works or is a available for one should not be expected of another.
SC is very much aware of this dissatisfaction with the filter and is doing what they can when they can. That's all they can do at this time.
Getting back to the topic at hand, which is in this post and the link contained therein, should be what future posts are about...and since the topic in that post has just had major revisions and additions, there isn't even anything to discuss on this thread at this time. A couple of weeks, at least, to allow these changes to settle in and for all of us to get used to them is needed before adequate information is gained to make complaints and/or demands for Nick.
