How to upgrade heroes at TH9 with regular clan wars?

I am going to TH9 as a max TH8, including lvl 8 walls, BK lvl 10 and lvl 2 Golems. Th8 was great fun but I am hoping that TH9 will be even better.

However, I am unsure about one thing. My clan wars regularly - we do about 2 wars per week, sometimes slightly more if the last war was too easy. I have set a target of getting my heroes to lvl 20 before upgrading to TH10. But I don't know if it will be possible to do that with regular wars. At TH8 it didn't matter as the dragons were powerful enough for most TH8 bases and didn't need the BK.

How do you guys do it? Any tips for managing it? I might be able to gem 10-12 hero levels over a period, but any more than that is just too much and not a good value for money, in my opinion.

Well upgrading the first few levels of you AQ shouldn't be too hard and you will be surprised at how little difference not using the king will make when he's upgrading and you have the queen upgraded past lvl 10.
You could drop out of the odd war & attack earlier or later. You could gem the finish time if you had to gem at all.

If you are really good with hogs, you may not need heroes for clean up.

Last but not least, just attack th8 in war.... You don't need heroes to 3* max th8 if you have th9 troops.

Wars interfered with my upgrades. My clan warred once a week so for a while I was able to upgrade heroes the night the war ended and they would be ready in time for the next war. Obviously that only worked until their upgrade time got up to 6 days.

I left and found a farming clan. Doing my upgrades was more important to me than helping in a war that cost me more resources than I gained. It was fine back when elixir was useless to me but now that I can put it into walls I don't like throwing it away.

Right now I have both heroes upgrading at the same time - though to be honest I don't know how long I can keep that up. They're getting so expensive I won't be able to farm enough de to keep them both upgrading at once for more than a few more weeks.

I can't seem to upgrade my queen more than the king, for the reason that I use AQ in both farming & war.
Tho I can't imagine upgrading her anytime soon "unless" if I gemmed it or semi-quit playing CoC.


The only way to upgrade your heroes is by using air raids on wars, in which heroes are not a necessity compared to ground-troops compositions.

I just stopped doing clan wars.

you can always skip a war while upgrading them , tell them to let you out of the next war if you can't make it

It's a shame.

I cannot, actually, do any war, i'm focused to finish my Heros.
I've got always one (or the two) sleeping.....
Because of my level, Heros are very helpful in war.

So, no héros, no war (for me)

Also your enemies have bases with a hero upgrading so that's part of the war. You give the contribution you can no one can insist more. Btw at the moment I have my AQ upgrading and we have a war, no problem. It might be wise that you inform your leader or co that you are attacking this war a bit lower because you have a hero upgrading, that should be all needed.

I am in a high Lvl clan and we war with elite clans but I still upgrade them when ever I can, I wanna get max heros

It's a bit stink raiding without them but its not a deal breaker... When they're upgrading it could pay to hold off and raid later in the war, picking off easier enemies to make sure you still manage to get 3 stars, or to clean up some failed raids down in the lower order.

Congrats on Maxing ur townhall 8. The AQ for first 5 lvls doesnt take too much time. As of now lavaloonion is very strong for th9 and th10, and in most cases doesn't need heroes for 2 stars and in some cases 3 stars. Rest u could use gems to finish upgrade time on ur Queen after lvl10 or so, i would let BK go normally without using gems. In ur lab get balloons and minions to max as so u cqn use them and also get ur DE barracks to unlock hound. 😊

Youve hardly used them for war, so wont miss them.
If you can keep the Q on constant upgrade, dont use her at all, youll have never had the pleasure of using her. So your attacking feels the same but with bigger th9 camps. King is then a bonus.
As all the other guys said, you have a number of options. Sitting out, aiming lower when have 1 or 0 heroes.
But the second you have both awake for a war or push, it will be much harder to bear putting them to sleep.

My king took his first week nap in months yesterday. soon as they got to 35, and actually started using both for farming, was too nice having them to contemplate 10 weeks combined absence.

Just let them know you'll be attacking lower than usual.

Upgrading one hero at a time won't make a problem. Attack people lower than those you attack normally. Attack mostly with hog combinations or dragons as they don't require both heroes and will mostly get you 2 stars and sometimes 3 stars

Thanks a lot for all the great replies and encouragement. I guess I could keep one hero active and the other asleep, and gem 4 or 5 AQ upgrades when she reaches lvl 15. But honestly, I have a feeling that I will suffer in two ways:

- 3 stars will be really hard to get vs other TH9, especially when the AQ is sleeping.
- By my calculations, I will have to keep at least 1 hero constantly upgrading if I am to even get close to both heroes lvl 20 in the 5 months it will take to max my defences.

BTW, I feel like I owe you guys a few explanations about some of the suggestions:

- No opt outs in our clan, except for real life situations. Not even if the Spell Factory is upgrading. Such people just have to attack lower than usual.
- I am an Elder which works pretty much like a Co-Leader in our clan. I won't have to inform anybody but obviously I want to set an example by consistently getting 5-6 stars. I realize that it will be tough vs other TH9, and might impossible without heroes.

Do you guys think our clan rules are too rigid? And thanks a lot for all the helpful and positive replies. Less than 4 days till TH9 and I am already sitting on max elixir and 45k DE, handing out dragons and wizards to clannies so any elixir I raid doesn't disappear into the ether :D

My clan goes to war back to back and as a th9 im upgrading both of my heroes and i have started using lavaloonion which helps me get 2 stars on almost any th9 and 3 stars on any th8.

sit out of wars for 1-2 months and farm hard that period. focus on camps, war troop upgrades (max hogs, loons + witches, hounds & golems can come later since they take longer) & heros. by the end of that you'll have both heros at lvl 10-15ish and you can war regularly with just one hero down at a time.

get your th running with th9 attacking power before slowing your progress with wars. that's how i did it and now i can war back to back except when both heros are down. good luck man

Real life has intervened and I won't be able to war consistently. So I guess I am free to join a farming clan and farm my heroes to lvl 20, and maybe even lvl 30! Ambitious, I know, but what is the harm in trying? :D
