Mungo’s TH8 Grind Strategy

Howdy fellow forum goers and clash-enthusiasts. I know there are a plethora of great TH8 guides out there for you to choose from, but seeing as I am virtually about to hit upgrade I figured I’d post my random thoughts for you guys here.

About Me

Hi! I’m Mungo. I’m an avid Clasher but have only been playing for 7-9 months. I’ve just published my first TH8 base design and so far the feedback has been great. Before designing my own I hopped from a few different farming bases and primarily used the tempest design for wars. Then when the 4^th mortar came out I decided to make my own base. You can find "The Nerd" here. I firmly believe in max’ing out townhalls before upgrading.

Timing

First things first. Let’s talk timing here. The bottleneck for TH8 is research. It takes 147 days of straight research if you wish to max out research. It takes a little closer to 90-125 days I believe (depending on number of builders) for all your buildings (including your hero) to reach max IF you come in from a max TH7. If you gem, obviously this takes less time.

Building Upgrade Order

This is one of the biggest questions most TH8’s have. Here are my rules of thumb:

Always build new buildings first. The incremental value of having a new building is more significant than upgrading to higher level defenses. Then upgrade the new buildings to the previous TH max level. Then upgrade from there.

My upgrade order (I have 5 builders). Lab, CC, Tesla, 2 mortars after all my initial buildings built. Then 1 WT. Then I did either mortar/WT depending on how much gold I had as my builders came free. Then I upgraded my BK constantly to 10. As builders came free, I started toying with AD’s, one or two teslas at a time, and DE storage/DE drills. When I got bored of mass drag attacking in clan wars, I built one barrack to 10 and 1 dark barrack to 4 just so I could GoWiPe. You only need 1 of each at first, hold off on the rest until later. Who cares if you have to wait 1.5-2 hours for a war army. Just build them overnight. If you are having a hard time getting your BK up because farming DE is hard for you, prioritize your second DE drill.

LAB. Self-explanatory. Large upgrades available here

CC. Self-explanatory. 5 extra troops for war/farming/defense is huge.

ABT: ALWAYS BE TESLA’ING. Literally, straight from the beginning until the end. You will come to TH8 with 2 level 3 teslas. The max for TH8 is level 6. Build your new tesla to level 3, then upgrade each one to level 4, then level 5, then level 6. Unless you’re willing to upgrade all at once and get crushed (like ripping off a band-aid I suppose), do one at a time. But don’t upgrade one from 3->6, that’s not worth it. The total time for tesla’s (if you came in max TH7) is a WHOPPING 81 days.

Splash before point damage. The funniest bases I’ve seen or encountered are max AT/cannons and gray WT and weak mortars. Your biggest enemy at TH8 are TH9 giants, and point damage is the equivalent of blowing in their ears and tickling their private parts. Get those WT and Mortars up QUICK. Even if you don’t believe they’re useful, the gold mortars and pink WT are intimidating to new TH8s and will probably lead to a snipe.

BK: One of the strongest troops in the game. Be prepared to upgrade it 5 levels at a time as the non-divisible by 5 levels are almost pointless. For example, there’s not a significant difference between levels 8 and 9, but there’s a huge upgrade from 9 to 10. I upgraded him straight from 5 to 10 with only breaking for wars, in which case I’d attack with him and then quickly upgrade. Having BK at level 10 was a huge game changer for me for farming and for warring.

Lab Upgrade Order

This is completely dependent on what your needs are. There is no “good answer” – if you barch upgrade arch and barbs first. If you war, drag and rage first.

This is the order I did: Archers, wiz, barb, drag, giant, wallbreaker, rage, loons, pekka (2), golems (2), pekka (3), heal, min (3), min (4), lightning, hogs (3), goblins, hogs (4), healer, valk

Gemming

Don’t let other people fool you or make you feel bad – if you have the means and are willing to gem things that’s completely your call. I’ve gemmed a bit, not a huge amount, but I definitely have. I never gem resources, only time spent during the upgrade because I enjoy farming, I hate waiting. The further out the time, the better the ratio if you’re going to gem something. For example, it costs 260 gems to polish off the last day, but only 363 gems if you clear off 2 days of build/research time. I typically only gem finish things if I have max of a resource or if there’s like 4 hours left and my clan is warring and I could use the upgrade. There are many people (registered sellers) who sell itunes/google play gift cards on ebay if you’re looking for a discount.

Gemming while farming is awesome. There’s no point to gemming all four barracks though. 2 barracks, spell factory, and BK is how to do it. The bottleneck before you hit next will be spells or your BK, not your troops.

Max vs Rush

Once again, this is your personal choice. A good deal of my clan has what I would call “rushed” townhalls, but are still extraordinarily effective. Another portion of my clan have max buildings but purple walls. I believe in max’ing out my townhalls because I don’t think I’ll have the time to keep backlogging things, or if one troop gets nerfed I don’t want to wait 2 weeks before I research another troop to farm/war with. If you war a lot, you should really max out your base because you will get ranked significantly higher based on your townhall level.

I plan on having 100% skulls before I hit TH9, because they take SO much gold at this level. With xbows, new WT, and new tesla I’m going to be gold-starved anyways when I hit TH9. I rather get it completely out of the way now.

If you plan on just farming, the loot penalty isn’t terrible for TH9 as with an upgrading barch you can effectively farm most TH8’s and the 10% penalty isn’t a huge deal. I would still recommend getting your troops and defenses up.

Collectors

GET THESE TO LEVEL 12! The math here is just too appealing. Level 12 collectors churn out 3,500 elixir/gold per hour. That’s 21,000 of each resource an hour. When you get attacked and get a 12 hour shield, that’s 252,000 of each primary resource during your shield. How often do you lose that amount when you’re raided? I love getting raided. Not only do I learn something from my attackers regarding strategy or a weakness in my base, I typically gain more resources during my shield than I lose during my defense.

Farming Army Compositions

• BARCH (barb and arch, wallbreakers) – 80 barbs, 112 archers, 4 wallbreakers (3 lightning spells)
• BAM (barb, arch, minions, wallbreakers) – 66 barbs, 86 archers, 20 minions, 4 wallbreakers (3 lightning spells)
• GiBARCH (giants, barb, arch, wallbreakers) – 12 giants, 12 barbs, 120 archers, 4 wallbreakers (1 heal, 1 rage, 1 whatever)
• GiBAM (giants, barb, arch, minions, wallbreakers) – 12 giants, 12 barbs, 88 archers, 16 minions, 4 wallbreakers (1 heal, 1 rage, 1 whatever)
• WAG (wizards, archers, giants, wallbreakers) – 12 wizards, 16 giants, 58 archers, 7 wallbreakers (2 rage, 1 heal)
• GiWAM (giants, wizards, archers, minions, wallbreakers) – 12 wizards, 16 giants, 7 wallbreakers, 20 minions, 18 archers (2 rage, 1 heal)

BARCH, BAM, GiBARCH, GiBAM are mostly for collector raids
WAG, GiWAM are for drilling to DE/core/storages

Trophy Ranges

This depends on if you’re ok with getting crushed on defenses, hitting next a bunch of times, looking for DE, or looking for primary resources. I personal farm between C2-C1 because I love the loot bonus for DE. When I was looking only for primary resources I found more success in the G1-C3 range. I know a ton of people find good loot below these ranges, but the 65k/65k/300 bonus for me in C1 means that I can now hit 100-150k easy bases and get over 200k+ in primary resources and typically 500-1k DE all day long. Looking for 200k+ in G2 is fine, but for me there are more 130-150k bases that are easy to star high up in crystal leagues.

War Strategies

Offense

Mass dragon – 10 drags, 3 rage spells, and either hogs or loons in your cc. Do not bring a heal spell unless you’re an experienced dragon-rider. If there is an exposed air defense, go with loons, if it’s a little deeper, go with hogs. The goal of dragons is to use one or two at the start to clear a path, then funnel the rest of your dragons towards the core. Once the CC is proc’d, the troops will drag the dragons into the core even further. The detriment to dragons is their somewhat random path choice, but if you can funnel them properly you will almost assuredly 2* most TH8’s if not 3* them. Best if used if the base doesn’t have 3 level 6 air defenses located in a triangle in the second layer. If the base has all 3 ad’s in the core, it’s a super easy 3* if you can funnel and drop a rage in the core.

I’m a huge fan of bringing 3 lightning spells to war with mass dragons. Especially if there are 3 level 6 air defenses. I’ll lure the cc onto an air defense (by bringing 9 dragons instead of 10), lightning the entire cc along with one of the air defenses, then bring hogs/loons depending on how exposed the rest of the air defenses are and attack from the side with the better defended air defense. Release the hogs/loons either when the air defense you’re going after targets the dragons, or if you have a clear path to them right away.

GoWiPe – 2 golems, 3 pekkas, 12 wizards, 7 wallbreakers, 3 barbs (or 8 wallbreakers, 1 barb), 2 rage spells, 1 heal spell (or 1 rage, 1 heal, 1 lightning). Pack either wiz or an additional pekka in your cc. The way you decide is if the base is highly segmented or not. If there are a ton of compartments, go with wiz – otherwise go with pekkas. The reasoning behind this is that pekkas are slow to attack, so busting through walls might take two swipes (5 secconds) which is just too long to be acceptable to me. Start on one side or a corner, drop both golems, clear the outside buildings with wiz, bust open the walls with wallbreakers, then drop one pekka at first. If it targets the interior, quickly drop the other 2 pekka’s and your barb king. As soon as they get into the base they’ll wreak havoc. Use one rage when hitting the cc. Continue to use wallbreakers to break open compartments keeping the pekkas inside the base and not wandering around the outside with their thumbs up their booty.

Defense

The most important thing to me was creating multiple layers with good meatshields surrounding my air defenses. Most of the time I get mass-drag'd, and I usually hold to 1* or 2*. Not bad when I'm averaging getting attacked 6-8 times while ranked in the 40's in my clan. I typically have a drag+1wiz+1arch in my cc, but if I change that it will be for 6wiz+1arch. I still think dragons slow everything down, because they're really slow to be lured and have high hp. Also, be sure to put your BK close to your townhall, as now that he can't be lured you're going to want him there if you get hogged.

Minimum Needed to Upgrade

In my humble opinion, if you were to rush, this is what I'd make sure I'd have before pulling the trigger and upgrading to TH9:

• BK TO 10
• Lvl 5: Archers, Barbs, Giants, Loons, Wiz
• Lvl 4: Minions
• Lvl 3: Drags
• Lvl 2: Golems, Pekkas, Hogs
• ALL SPLASH, TESLA, AND AIR DEFENSES MAX
• ALL Purple walls

Conclusion

It’s been a fun ride but I’m ready for my AQ, x-bows, and witches. Another 75 walls or so and I’ll be ready to fly through to TH9. Following this strategy in a clan that wars 3 times every two weeks, I’ve been able to sustain DE of over 65k for the majority of my time here after my BK reached 10. I’ve very rarely needed to farm more gold or elixir to get another builder ready at last minute and I get sniped 7-8 out of every 10 times. One last thing! I feel that I should say here that you really want to go to TH9 with max gold, max elixir, max DE, and a completely (or at least 75% full) CC of goodies. We're going to burn through them really really quickly :cool:

Leave your collectors alone. Upgrade your teslas, WT, and walls.

I never used GiWiPe, because I was never short on DE. I imagine it's the same as golems, 6 giants:1 golem ratio but that seems really finnicky and could go bad in a hurry.

While I have often argued for rushing, I think you have done a great job at TH8. Congratulations, and Good luck with TH9! I hope that many people can learn from your guide :)

Well, I don't recommend rushing at all -- but if you were to, it's better to rush with maxed out defensive buildings and low level walls then to use low level buildings and maxed out walls.

Nice guide. I'm almost maxed, just need archer towers to level 10 from 9 and 113 skull walls.

No I think your perceptions about this guide are the ones that are generalized. This is one of the best guide around and it gives step by step information. Tbh why bother bumping if your all talk without specific details and constructive criticism.

Great guide, I'm a near maxed Th8 as well as everything he said is right on the money on what to upgrade...with the exception of Lvl 4 Minions :P Lol, I just never found a good use of them that Lvl 1 can't achieve.

lvl4 minions are awesome -- I recently climbed using max TH8 loonion (bye bye barrack gem boost :() but lvl5 will make my loonion at TH9 worth the upgrade here for sure! I highly recommend you get them up before you upgrade :cool:

Nice guide, would just like to add that hogs are a great war strat for TH8s, almost always a 3 star if the attacker is proficient and has practiced with hogs before

Yeah :) I have used level 1 hogs to wreck semi maxed th8s. My biggest concern is big bombs :( A maxed can take out 20+ level 2 hogs.

Good guide mate. Really good one. I dont believe maxing is truly necessary, but depends on playstyle actually. I did max TH8 when i changed a month back, but realised that my farming potential at TH9 is crazy. TH9 is THE place to be. Its fricking awesome, with a sweet spot for everything. I think i would be pretty strong now if i had made the jump earlier, then I would be pretty OP now. Farming is beautiful at TH9.

Awesome thread! I'm a fairly new th8 and I'll be using your guide as a checklist. It's very concise and easy to follow and understand. I especially like the various attack strategies for this townhall. Subscribed!

I'm not a hog-guy, as they only became viable for me after they were nerfed, but maybe I'll play around with them while I have 80k DE and see what I can conjure up :cool:

I have literally never used valks once. Not once. They're pretty nasty at higher levels, and I've been attacked with 9 of them before and it wreaked some havoc -- they're pretty strong in tight corridors.

I've also seen them used as part of someone's defensive CC. Their spin/splash damage can completely disrupt an incoming raid.

Ha, yea he doesn't like me at all. I didn't give him a glowing base appraisal and now he's bent on being better than me. I hope he succeeds!

@mungoflungo I would really recommend having full storages collectors and clan castle when your th upgrade finishes. I did when I upgraded to th9 in eqrly december and it helped a lot. So I wouldnt get continually raped by th9's I bought a week shield once I filled my storages. Nice guide btw

GET THESE TO LEVEL 12! The math here is just too appealing. Level 12 collectors churn out 3,500 elixir/gold per hour. That’s 21,000 of each resource an hour. When you get attacked and get a 12 hour shield, that’s 252,000 of each primary resource during your shield. How often do you lose that amount when you’re raided? I love getting raided. Not only do I learn something from my attackers regarding strategy or a weakness in my base, I typically gain more resources during my shield than I lose during my defense.

Farming Army Compositions

• BARCH (barb and arch, wallbreakers) – 80 barbs, 112 archers, 4 wallbreakers (3 lightning spells)
• BAM (barb, arch, minions, wallbreakers) – 66 barbs, 86 archers, 20 minions, 4 wallbreakers (3 lightning spells)
• GiBARCH (giants, barb, arch, wallbreakers) – 12 giants, 12 barbs, 120 archers, 4 wallbreakers (1 heal, 1 rage, 1 whatever)
• GiBAM (giants, barb, arch, minions, wallbreakers) – 12 giants, 12 barbs, 88 archers, 16 minions, 4 wallbreakers (1 heal, 1 rage, 1 whatever)
• WAG (wizards, archers, giants, wallbreakers) – 12 wizards, 16 giants, 58 archers, 7 wallbreakers (2 rage, 1 heal)
• GiWAM (giants, wizards, archers, minions, wallbreakers) – 12 wizards, 16 giants, 7 wallbreakers, 20 minions, 18 archers (2 rage, 1 heal)

BARCH, BAM, GiBARCH, GiBAM are mostly for collector raids
WAG, GiWAM are for drilling to DE/core/storages

Trophy Ranges

This depends on if you’re ok with getting crushed on defenses, hitting next a bunch of times, looking for DE, or looking for primary resources. I personal farm between C2-C1 because I love the loot bonus for DE. When I was looking only for primary resources I found more success in the G1-C3 range. I know a ton of people find good loot below these ranges, but the 65k/65k/300 bonus for me in C1 means that I can now hit 100-150k easy bases and get over 200k+ in primary resources and typically 500-1k DE all day long. Looking for 200k+ in G2 is fine, but for me there are more 130-150k bases that are easy to star high up in crystal leagues.

War Strategies

Offense

Mass dragon – 10 drags, 3 rage spells, and either hogs or loons in your cc. Do not bring a heal spell unless you’re an experienced dragon-rider. If there is an exposed air defense, go with loons, if it’s a little deeper, go with hogs. The goal of dragons is to use one or two at the start to clear a path, then funnel the rest of your dragons towards the core. Once the CC is proc’d, the troops will drag the dragons into the core even further. The detriment to dragons is their somewhat random path choice, but if you can funnel them properly you will almost assuredly 2* most TH8’s if not 3* them. Best if used if the base doesn’t have 3 level 6 air defenses located in a triangle in the second layer. If the base has all 3 ad’s in the core, it’s a super easy 3* if you can funnel and drop a rage in the core.

I’m a huge fan of bringing 3 lightning spells to war with mass dragons. Especially if there are 3 level 6 air defenses. I’ll lure the cc onto an air defense (by bringing 9 dragons instead of 10), lightning the entire cc along with one of the air defenses, then bring hogs/loons depending on how exposed the rest of the air defenses are and attack from the side with the better defended air defense. Release the hogs/loons either when the air defense you’re going after targets the dragons, or if you have a clear path to them right away.

GoWiPe – 2 golems, 3 pekkas, 12 wizards, 7 wallbreakers, 3 barbs (or 8 wallbreakers, 1 barb), 2 rage spells, 1 heal spell (or 1 rage, 1 heal, 1 lightning). Pack either wiz or an additional pekka in your cc. The way you decide is if the base is highly segmented or not. If there are a ton of compartments, go with wiz – otherwise go with pekkas. The reasoning behind this is that pekkas are slow to attack, so busting through walls might take two swipes (5 secconds) which is just too long to be acceptable to me. Start on one side or a corner, drop both golems, clear the outside buildings with wiz, bust open the walls with wallbreakers, then drop one pekka at first. If it targets the interior, quickly drop the other 2 pekka’s and your barb king. As soon as they get into the base they’ll wreak havoc. Use one rage when hitting the cc. Continue to use wallbreakers to break open compartments keeping the pekkas inside the base and not wandering around the outside with their thumbs up their booty.

Defense

The most important thing to me was creating multiple layers with good meatshields surrounding my air defenses. Most of the time I get mass-drag'd, and I usually hold to 1* or 2*. Not bad when I'm averaging getting attacked 6-8 times while ranked in the 40's in my clan. I typically have a drag+1wiz+1arch in my cc, but if I change that it will be for 6wiz+1arch. I still think dragons slow everything down, because they're really slow to be lured and have high hp. Also, be sure to put your BK close to your townhall, as now that he can't be lured you're going to want him there if you get hogged.

Minimum Needed to Upgrade

In my humble opinion, if you were to rush, this is what I'd make sure I'd have before pulling the trigger and upgrading to TH9:

• BK TO 10
• Lvl 5: Archers, Barbs, Giants, Loons, Wiz
• Lvl 4: Minions
• Lvl 3: Drags
• Lvl 2: Golems, Pekkas, Hogs
• ALL SPLASH, TESLA, AND AIR DEFENSES MAX
• ALL Purple walls

Conclusion

It’s been a fun ride but I’m ready for my AQ, x-bows, and witches. Another 75 walls or so and I’ll be ready to fly through to TH9. Following this strategy in a clan that wars 3 times every two weeks, I’ve been able to sustain DE of over 65k for the majority of my time here after my BK reached 10. I’ve very rarely needed to farm more gold or elixir to get another builder ready at last minute and I get sniped 7-8 out of every 10 times. I would want u to add few more points that would make urs a complete guide.
1) there are th8s out there who really suffer from lack of d.e. so I would suggest u to add a dedicated d.e farming strategy.
2)War:: I think u should also add war strategy using hogs if they are lvl4 which are good enough.
Also in ur GOWIPE strategy, if the opponents base have more compartments, I would train only one pekka with other in c.c and train my own wizzies and deploy them as I wish instead of letting them all spawn from c.c at once.

These are just my suggestions.

We typically have 5-10 people in masters, only 1 or 2 in champs. We just did a 3 day push and hit #49 in the US. I farmed here for a few days, primarily GoWiPe'ing, sometimes loonions....but I just dropped back down to C1. I need the gold to finish up my walls (the only thing I have left to do to max TH8) and the 75-100k Nexting cost in M3 was just too expensive for me to justify at this point. I usually farm mid-to-high 2400's....now that they expanded the trophy range for attacking to 400 (from 200 cups) I get my fair share of masters in my search for decent raids still :cool:

hunter, the suggestion for filling storages is good, of course. I am sitting on almost maxed out resources myself and being able to start TH9 upgrades without any downtime will be awesome :)

However, buying a shield, even a 1 day shield, would be a waste of gems, in my opinion. Only, a TH9 will be able to take all your loot and at max they can take 270k each of gold and elixir and 1800 DE. You can loot that back within 3-4 raids. Surely, you don't plan to not play clash for a full week!? ;)

I will use the gems to gem my spell factory instead.

Up to you my man. I would max (and am in the process of it as we speak). There's just nothing in research (maybe not valks) not worth upgrading in my opinion.

Just finished TH upgrade7 and I am in TH8 3 hrs ago.
I had full storages so I immediately upgrade my lab and also my DE storage. My DE is full already so I need to get that done so I can continue upgrade my BK. I then get all walls (upgrade to lvl 5), the 2 extra storages, archer tower, AD and now mortar. I do want to start get all the 'defense" building up so i can have at least a decent layout (I also use your NERD design, Mungo!).
I do plan to have

1 builder to switch between AD and Telsa.
1 builder to switch between Mortar/WT.
1 builder to get the 2nd DE Drill. After Drill is done, then use that builder to work on BK upgrade.
1 builder to work on walls, storage upgrade and new archer upgrades.

I hope I can average 1-2mil a day to keep builder busy, but I don't mind taking a break and stretch this out a bit... this is going to be a long journey, but i am looking forward to lv5 troops! Can't wait to test out Golems and Pekkas later when I am 80% max out (i know it is not efficient, but it is fun to learn some new techniques and enjoy this game!).

Absolutely make the jump now, assuming your farming army is maxed for TH8. Leaving builders idle and walls max waiting for the lab takes away your gold sink (walls), and further delays the biggest bottleneck in the game (upgrading AQ). All this assumes your goal is to progress as efficiently as possible. "Max everything" is the safest way to play, but it is also extremely inefficient.

Just here chuckling about calling TH 8 a grind.

Haha its working for me so far. But I just have three builders so a little slow. So far built all new buildings, all mortars almost th7 level and wizard tower getting their soon.

If you're trying to play clash of clans effectively. As a th8 you should be able to barch 200k of each every raid no problem.

It depends on your goals for TH 8 and how hard you farm. I prioritized my walls, so my elixir is always maxed out. The Gold you have to spend on TH 8 over elixir is astounding....huge bottleneck. I've also prioritized all elixir based upgrades, so when I go on to TH 9 I'll have maxed my elixir buildings (barracks, drills, storages and lab). I'm 25 walls away from all skulls and my TH 8 upgraded on 12/24.

Most people upgrade their walls at the end of the TH 8 road or as they go along. I'm rushing TH 8 so I can dump all excess elixir and gold into my walls at TH 9, essentially storing zero resources. I'll have all my defense to TH 7 levels and Lev 5 barb, arch, giant, wiz, loon and lev 3 dragon. Plan on moving along in a couple weeks.....a little over a month at TH 8.

Clashers -- I've gotten a lot of inquiries into how you should farm walls. I've tested out Silver 3 -> Master 3. So far the bread and butter for gold (at this current time) is to BAM between Gold 2 and Gold 1.

I've been able to actively BAM 5 walls a day in one farming session between these ranges.

2 levels on bk, 1 level on minion, 1 level on hog, 2 levels on rage, 1 level on heal, level 10 collectors does not a max base make. :p

Hi! I've been at th8 for a month now and I've been feeling the need to get a fourth builder. For that I want to trophy push to masters. Can anyone tell me what strategy I can use. I know all about sniping townhalls but I've heard that the're aren't many snipes available after C3 so any suggestions?

Snipe, 2 star when you can. Use WAG. When I got to C2 I switched to GoWiPe.

Be sure to get +50 trophies everytime you login to climb. Odds are someone will revenge you who you passed and take a boatload of trophies from you.

Go to crystal and live off the loot bonus. I've made 3k DE a day playing 4-5 hours total.

Most can get about 10-20k a day..3k a day won't cut it if you're trying to keep your heroes down + DE labs..

So for th8s defence buildings and the priority from most to least important that I think is....

Air Defence
Wizard Towers
Teslas
Mortars
Archer Towers
Cannons

And thats basically the order im maxing them in, also Mortars might actually be a little more important than Teslas but since there are so many Tesla upgrades at TH8.....

Was wondering if the Speed increasing on the Archer Tower makes it now more important than Teslas or Mortars maybe?

English is not my first lenguage so be easy on me.

Background Im just lvl 65 maxed TH7 (except for dark troops) with all my defenses up to TH7 (except for the new AD) and all pruple walls. Im in a low-lvl clan with folks from lvl 30 to lvl 80, everyone is either Gold or Silver.

with that said I have a couple of questions:

1. Trophy Range: Im 2 days from having my BARCH to lvl 5, but I was having issues finding BARCHable bases in Gold 2, got some sweet raids and I know I could stay at that range but I dont feel confident about going up Cristal III and above since I mostly use BARCH to farm, should I wait to get better troops?
2. AD: since we have wars against clans about our lvls I mostly get attacked by full dragons shouldnt I focus on AD as a priority over splash damage?
3. Collectors: mines are lvl 9 atm since I rely more on riding than anything else, so I guess this is going to be the last thing on my list?
4. BK: I heard getting DE was easier at TH8 and it has been that way so far. My BK is now lvl 3 and I plan to get it up to lvl 10 before going to TH9 but I didnt upgrade my dark troops at TH7 so that means Ill need to wait a long time till I start lvling up my hogs and after facing some bases with maxed AD Im starting to think that hogs would be better than dragons for wars (I know it depends on the base and well my dragons are just lvl 2)
5. saving DE: when I get raped by TH9s or TH8 with good troops they take a lot of DE shouldnt be I lvling my BK what lvl at the time instead of saving all that juicy DE to attrack higher lvls?

1. I'd say around Gold III is well for you. I've seen plentiful inactive bases there and there's not much TH9s that linger there. If you do want to reside in CIII, I'd say wait until you get your defenses 'til it's decent.

2. Splash first, AD second. Sure, Mass Drags will be your main nemesis in CWs, but sometimes regardless of AD level, skilled Dragon players could still 3* your base. You'll fare off better if you maxed your splash better.

3. Collectors/Mines shouldn't really matter if you're a really active player.

4. Since you mentioned that you haven't upgraded your Hogs beforehand, I'm assuming they're L1 rn. To get atleast the Hogs to L3, which is the suitable level for wars, would take I think 18 days combined for the upgrade from 1>2 and 2>3. So yeah, I'd upgrade Drags first, Drags generally can 3* most bases if done correctly.

5. Upgrade your BK to L5 to get his ability at least. After that, I'd recommend saving up DE for upgrading Dark Troops.

1. I would recommend going to c3 only if you want to farm DE a bit faster and if you are not worried about your losses. Gold 2 is safe since you can get a cheap shield easily. But c3 is full trophy hunters that are not worried about resources and will turn your base upside down to get those 3 stars. So it's better to wait till your defences and walls are better.

2. In my opinion it's better to be done with the ADs in the first few weeks of th 8. And the best way to do it is to do them all at the same time. That will be one hell of a week but you won't have to worry abt them for the rest of the th 8. 2 ADs are not gonna be of much help against a dragon rush and doing one at a time is big draw back for clan wars since drag rush is pretty much the only attack that will be used against you till you start maxing your other defences.

In my case I had a builder on the new AD all the time and once it got to lvl 5, started all ADs at once. Isn't that bad if you lay low at silver 1 or 2 for a week. Just don't go around stealing DE for a week.

3. If you farm a lot it doesn't matter. Still it's better to Max them before you move to th9.

4. Better get him to lvl 5 before you start hogs. It won't be that hard to do both. I maxed my drills before anything else and attack any weak base with 500+ DE while I loot for gold. And if you had properly maxed th7, you will have plenty of elixir to spare. I use that to revenge loaded th8 & th9 bases with dragons. And then there is the clan war loot. This should easily get you at least 30-40k a week. And if your hogs are lvl 1, you are better of getting the golem to lvl 2, than hogs to lvl 3 or 4.

Saving DE is a big problem. You are better off spending it as soon as you can. I mostly farm at silver 1/ gold 3. When I have a lot of de , I drop back into silver 1 once I am done looting. Don't get many attacks there. And I get more from revenge even if I do get attacked. Better get a good DE protection base or build one.

About Me

Hi! I’m Mungo. I’m an avid Clasher but have only been playing for 7-9 months. I’ve just published my first TH8 base design and so far the feedback has been great. Before designing my own I hopped from a few different farming bases and primarily used the tempest design for wars. Then when the 4^th mortar came out I decided to make my own base. You can find "The Nerd" here. I firmly believe in max’ing out townhalls before upgrading.

Timing

First things first. Let’s talk timing here. The bottleneck for TH8 is research. It takes 147 days of straight research if you wish to max out research. It takes a little closer to 90-125 days I believe (depending on number of builders) for all your buildings (including your hero) to reach max IF you come in from a max TH7. If you gem, obviously this takes less time.

Building Upgrade Order

This is one of the biggest questions most TH8’s have. Here are my rules of thumb:

Always build new buildings first. The incremental value of having a new building is more significant than upgrading to higher level defenses. Then upgrade the new buildings to the previous TH max level. Then upgrade from there.

My upgrade order (I have 5 builders). Lab, CC, Tesla, 2 mortars after all my initial buildings built. Then 1 WT. Then I did either mortar/WT depending on how much gold I had as my builders came free. Then I upgraded my BK constantly to 10. As builders came free, I started toying with AD’s, one or two teslas at a time, and DE storage/DE drills. When I got bored of mass drag attacking in clan wars, I built one barrack to 10 and 1 dark barrack to 4 just so I could GoWiPe. You only need 1 of each at first, hold off on the rest until later. Who cares if you have to wait 1.5-2 hours for a war army. Just build them overnight. If you are having a hard time getting your BK up because farming DE is hard for you, prioritize your second DE drill.

LAB. Self-explanatory. Large upgrades available here

CC. Self-explanatory. 5 extra troops for war/farming/defense is huge.

ABT: ALWAYS BE TESLA’ING. Literally, straight from the beginning until the end. You will come to TH8 with 2 level 3 teslas. The max for TH8 is level 6. Build your new tesla to level 3, then upgrade each one to level 4, then level 5, then level 6. Unless you’re willing to upgrade all at once and get crushed (like ripping off a band-aid I suppose), do one at a time. But don’t upgrade one from 3->6, that’s not worth it. The total time for tesla’s (if you came in max TH7) is a WHOPPING 81 days.

Splash before point damage. The funniest bases I’ve seen or encountered are max AT/cannons and gray WT and weak mortars. Your biggest enemy at TH8 are TH9 giants, and point damage is the equivalent of blowing in their ears and tickling their private parts. Get those WT and Mortars up QUICK. Even if you don’t believe they’re useful, the gold mortars and pink WT are intimidating to new TH8s and will probably lead to a snipe.

BK: One of the strongest troops in the game. Be prepared to upgrade it 5 levels at a time as the non-divisible by 5 levels are almost pointless. For example, there’s not a significant difference between levels 8 and 9, but there’s a huge upgrade from 9 to 10. I upgraded him straight from 5 to 10 with only breaking for wars, in which case I’d attack with him and then quickly upgrade. Having BK at level 10 was a huge game changer for me for farming and for warring.

Lab Upgrade Order

This is completely dependent on what your needs are. There is no “good answer” – if you barch upgrade arch and barbs first. If you war, drag and rage first.

This is the order I did: Archers, wiz, barb, drag, giant, wallbreaker, rage, loons, pekka (2), golems (2), pekka (3), heal, min (3), min (4), lightning, hogs (3), goblins, hogs (4), healer, valk

Gemming

Don’t let other people fool you or make you feel bad – if you have the means and are willing to gem things that’s completely your call. I’ve gemmed a bit, not a huge amount, but I definitely have. I never gem resources, only time spent during the upgrade because I enjoy farming, I hate waiting. The further out the time, the better the ratio if you’re going to gem something. For example, it costs 260 gems to polish off the last day, but only 363 gems if you clear off 2 days of build/research time. I typically only gem finish things if I have max of a resource or if there’s like 4 hours left and my clan is warring and I could use the upgrade. There are many people (registered sellers) who sell itunes/google play gift cards on ebay if you’re looking for a discount.

Gemming while farming is awesome. There’s no point to gemming all four barracks though. 2 barracks, spell factory, and BK is how to do it. The bottleneck before you hit next will be spells or your BK, not your troops.

Max vs Rush

Once again, this is your personal choice. A good deal of my clan has what I would call “rushed” townhalls, but are still extraordinarily effective. Another portion of my clan have max buildings but purple walls. I believe in max’ing out my townhalls because I don’t think I’ll have the time to keep backlogging things, or if one troop gets nerfed I don’t want to wait 2 weeks before I research another troop to farm/war with. If you war a lot, you should really max out your base because you will get ranked significantly higher based on your townhall level.

I plan on having 100% skulls before I hit TH9, because they take SO much gold at this level. With xbows, new WT, and new tesla I’m going to be gold-starved anyways when I hit TH9. I rather get it completely out of the way now.

If you plan on just farming, the loot penalty isn’t terrible for TH9 as with an upgrading barch you can effectively farm most TH8’s and the 10% penalty isn’t a huge deal. I would still recommend getting your troops and defenses up.

Collectors

GET THESE TO LEVEL 12! The math here is just too appealing. Level 12 collectors churn out 3,500 elixir/gold per hour. That’s 21,000 of each resource an hour. When you get attacked and get a 12 hour shield, that’s 252,000 of each primary resource during your shield. How often do you lose that amount when you’re raided? I love getting raided. Not only do I learn something from my attackers regarding strategy or a weakness in my base, I typically gain more resources during my shield than I lose during my defense.

Farming Army Compositions

• BARCH (barb and arch, wallbreakers) – 80 barbs, 112 archers, 4 wallbreakers (3 lightning spells)
• BAM (barb, arch, minions, wallbreakers) – 66 barbs, 86 archers, 20 minions, 4 wallbreakers (3 lightning spells)
• GiBARCH (giants, barb, arch, wallbreakers) – 12 giants, 12 barbs, 120 archers, 4 wallbreakers (1 heal, 1 rage, 1 whatever)
• GiBAM (giants, barb, arch, minions, wallbreakers) – 12 giants, 12 barbs, 88 archers, 16 minions, 4 wallbreakers (1 heal, 1 rage, 1 whatever)
• WAG (wizards, archers, giants, wallbreakers) – 12 wizards, 16 giants, 58 archers, 7 wallbreakers (2 rage, 1 heal)
• GiWAM (giants, wizards, archers, minions, wallbreakers) – 12 wizards, 16 giants, 7 wallbreakers, 20 minions, 18 archers (2 rage, 1 heal)

BARCH, BAM, GiBARCH, GiBAM are mostly for collector raids
WAG, GiWAM are for drilling to DE/core/storages

Trophy Ranges

This depends on if you’re ok with getting crushed on defenses, hitting next a bunch of times, looking for DE, or looking for primary resources. I personal farm between C2-C1 because I love the loot bonus for DE. When I was looking only for primary resources I found more success in the G1-C3 range. I know a ton of people find good loot below these ranges, but the 65k/65k/300 bonus for me in C1 means that I can now hit 100-150k easy bases and get over 200k+ in primary resources and typically 500-1k DE all day long. Looking for 200k+ in G2 is fine, but for me there are more 130-150k bases that are easy to star high up in crystal leagues.

War Strategies

Offense

Mass dragon – 10 drags, 3 rage spells, and either hogs or loons in your cc. Do not bring a heal spell unless you’re an experienced dragon-rider. If there is an exposed air defense, go with loons, if it’s a little deeper, go with hogs. The goal of dragons is to use one or two at the start to clear a path, then funnel the rest of your dragons towards the core. Once the CC is proc’d, the troops will drag the dragons into the core even further. The detriment to dragons is their somewhat random path choice, but if you can funnel them properly you will almost assuredly 2* most TH8’s if not 3* them. Best if used if the base doesn’t have 3 level 6 air defenses located in a triangle in the second layer. If the base has all 3 ad’s in the core, it’s a super easy 3* if you can funnel and drop a rage in the core.

I’m a huge fan of bringing 3 lightning spells to war with mass dragons. Especially if there are 3 level 6 air defenses. I’ll lure the cc onto an air defense (by bringing 9 dragons instead of 10), lightning the entire cc along with one of the air defenses, then bring hogs/loons depending on how exposed the rest of the air defenses are and attack from the side with the better defended air defense. Release the hogs/loons either when the air defense you’re going after targets the dragons, or if you have a clear path to them right away.

GoWiPe – 2 golems, 3 pekkas, 12 wizards, 7 wallbreakers, 3 barbs (or 8 wallbreakers, 1 barb), 2 rage spells, 1 heal spell (or 1 rage, 1 heal, 1 lightning). Pack either wiz or an additional pekka in your cc. The way you decide is if the base is highly segmented or not. If there are a ton of compartments, go with wiz – otherwise go with pekkas. The reasoning behind this is that pekkas are slow to attack, so busting through walls might take two swipes (5 secconds) which is just too long to be acceptable to me. Start on one side or a corner, drop both golems, clear the outside buildings with wiz, bust open the walls with wallbreakers, then drop one pekka at first. If it targets the interior, quickly drop the other 2 pekka’s and your barb king. As soon as they get into the base they’ll wreak havoc. Use one rage when hitting the cc. Continue to use wallbreakers to break open compartments keeping the pekkas inside the base and not wandering around the outside with their thumbs up their booty.

Defense

The most important thing to me was creating multiple layers with good meatshields surrounding my air defenses. Most of the time I get mass-drag'd, and I usually hold to 1* or 2*. Not bad when I'm averaging getting attacked 6-8 times while ranked in the 40's in my clan. I typically have a drag+1wiz+1arch in my cc, but if I change that it will be for 6wiz+1arch. I still think dragons slow everything down, because they're really slow to be lured and have high hp. Also, be sure to put your BK close to your townhall, as now that he can't be lured you're going to want him there if you get hogged.

Minimum Needed to Upgrade

In my humble opinion, if you were to rush, this is what I'd make sure I'd have before pulling the trigger and upgrading to TH9:

• BK TO 10
• Lvl 5: Archers, Barbs, Giants, Loons, Wiz
• Lvl 4: Minions
• Lvl 3: Drags
• Lvl 2: Golems, Pekkas, Hogs
• ALL SPLASH, TESLA, AND AIR DEFENSES MAX
• ALL Purple walls

Conclusion

It’s been a fun ride but I’m ready for my AQ, x-bows, and witches. Another 75 walls or so and I’ll be ready to fly through to TH9. Following this strategy in a clan that wars 3 times every two weeks, I’ve been able to sustain DE of over 65k for the majority of my time here after my BK reached 10. I’ve very rarely needed to farm more gold or elixir to get another builder ready at last minute and I get sniped 7-8 out of every 10 times. One last thing! I feel that I should say here that you really want to go to TH9 with max gold, max elixir, max DE, and a completely (or at least 75% full) CC of goodies. We're going to burn through them really really quickly :cool:

Thanks Mungo for a solid guide! And to the people who are critical: grow the hell up... pathetic...

While I don't necessarily agree with everything, I do love learning and enjoy the different viewpoints; makes me re-consider my thinking on things.

One thing that I disagree with is mortar over AD if you war a lot. Yes, I've read the retort a few posts above, but having even just two AD6s seems to make opposing war-clans to pause before attacking with dragons, especially other TH8s. I keep getting TH9s that attack down, which I rather consider a (warped) victory for my clan. :D

And in regards to farming, I fully admit that I must be getting lucky, for I don't (yet?) cringe at being overrun with TH9 barch as of today. Perhaps that will change...

Good effort for the guide and I enjoyed reading it. I've already made some strategy changes in my development because of reading this.

Mungo - excellent guide. My issue has always been upgrading defenses vs defending the base. With five builders it is easy to upgrade WTs, mortars, ADs and teslas at the same time. Yet this leaves you without four very important base defenses. So you can scale back to maybe two of the spash defenses and one AD. This extends your upgrade time by weeks.

What do you find is the best balance between aggressive upgrading and base defense?

I disagree personally with how you explain splash defense over point. Giants are tanks. They have high health. A point defense will kill a giant much quicker then splash. Splash is best against barch and bam and should be levelled first but ignoring or saying point defences aren't as important is wrong because depending on the composition point might e more important than splash

I didn't say point defenses aren't important, nor did I mention them at all. My question was about the splash defenses.

I've been following this guide since hitting th8 and it has been a huge help, thanks! When would you recommend upgrading the point damage defenses? I still have to upgrade my barracks, air defenses, point damage defenses, and traps.
