I only have dark barrack 1, and I don't even know if I should ever upgrade it because the troops take up a lot of dark elixir, which is hard for me to get.

Every dark troop except for the minion has a special property that no elixir troop has. For example, the golem has an extremely high amount of hit points matched by no other troop. While they may be expensive, dark troops are also very effective.
ABSOLUTLEY UPGRADE DB, certain troops have very impressive skills IE. The witch summons skeletons the golem can split into two smaller gollems once it dies so at higher levels of gameplay (around max th9 and th10) it is really hard to progress (get cups/perform in war) without having these db troops. So in short yes some tier1 troops are better than db troops but your later db troops are really nice to have in your bag of tricks. Hope this is helpful

Hogriderz - jump walls and target def.
Valks- have insane splash damage
Golems- spilt into 2 smaller golemites have1/5 the hp and damage as the original
Witches- summons 6-8 skeletons
Lava hounds - target AD and once they die they split into 4 (i think) smaller hounds
They are not better, just more useful in certain ways.
Are minions still worth it?
Minions are the only low-housing-space air troop, taking up only 2 total space and are much more useful for clearing structures than dragons/balloons.Quote:

As TH10 the only way to win a clan wars battle is to use DE troops and to max out the troops you use.
DE troops are not different in this way from regular - if you will not upgrade them they will not perform well.

U can't compare any two troops. Every troop has its own importance. But always upgrade any troop according to ur usage. Coming to dark barracks at th7, I agree u won't use den much now. But, I suggest upgrading it coz u might want to use dem when u go higher and u saved pretty much time.
Upgrade it. It's worth it.
I would upgrade it to get hog rider. They may be expensive but minions r good for farming and hogs can be used in war. I would hold off on valks and golems. U don't need them yet. But u definately will eventually. Try 20 minions with barch for farming. They make a big difference.
