Just the same. It only limits the incoming damage of each individual attack (but every single attack while it is active). For instance:
Say a troop enters a cell where the spell is active @ level 3, and its getting hit by a giant bomb, archer tower, and a wizard tower (wow this unit is in for it).
Giant Bomb @ 255 - limited to 50 damage
Archer Tower @ 65 - limited to 50 damage (per hit)
Cannon @ 65 - limited to 50 damage (per hit)
Wizard Tower @ 35 - no effect, full damage
(i'm just using the DPS here, not sure what the towers actually hit for)
As you can see, this troop is still going to take a lot of damage. It's just meant to limit some of the large potential so that players can be strategic and creative with it. I.E., if they have a good feeling of where a giant bomb is at, they can keep a pack of hogs or wizards alive by putting this down before their troops eat it.
