I am in gold league and my friends are in upper leagues.
They all have this problem!!
I think you dont see that dark is rare and getting it is hard. So people dont care if they lose they just want to capture it

I have seen alot do so.

No, if you have 50K DE in a lvl 4 storage and 50K DE in a lvl 5, you'll lose more DE from lightnings with a lvl 4 storage.

My friend has a level 4 DE storage and he loses around 1200 with lightening!

Do you have any estimation that for how many hours you should drill to get it back in that level?!

The problem is, this is a strategic game and people need to use strategic plan for getting resources. If people try to get drak from me by attacking with troops, I dont mind. They tried it and got it.
What I am saying is people get a rare resource with no effort!! This is the problem.

I fully understand that DE is much rarer than pink elixir. But it's not nonexistent. Far from it. I farm between gold 1 and crystal 2 most of the time and I'm always swimming in it. Only hero upgrades left to spend it on. Considering both of my heros are 100k upgrades, I believe I'm quite a attractive target for lightning strikes. Wanna guess how many I've incurred this type of attack in last 6 month? Less than ten. It happens. I lose a little bit and I move on.

In short, lightning attacks are a minor annoyance at best. No change gameplay wise is needed. What needs to change is your perception that a lightning strike is a travesty against you. Shake it off or revenge.
