For farming, I would not advise. If you were trophy hunting, dragons are great against bad air defense bases. But spending 36k elixir on a troop for farming is not effective.
They are very good. Effective for revenging those big boy bases, or just for a fun army to wake up to. IMO they aren't the most exciting troops to use, I find them quite boring. I quite like cooking up pekka/giant/wiz, or balloon/minion/archer armies for morning raids (queue right before going to sleep the night before).
If you don't have time to make them, make them overnight while you sleep. They are great for donating and for attacking. Im th 8 and i usually have a lot of elixir to spend
30 mins is pretty quick for what they are capable of.
You should be maxing your elixir anyways if you farm enough so that's not a big deal
Max dragon puts you into the big league as far as getting your pound of flesh on revenge, I still get hammered by lvl 3 dragons myself.
I love my lev 3 dragons, always take one for clean ups and make profit using them.
5 days remaining and I got my level 3 drags.. gonna start to revenge those premature TH9 that took too much gold from me ;)
I'm farming and I use one level 3 dragon with my farming raid, it's actually really helpful for getting resource because of how it sucks up damage and can easily fly into the middle of the resources, and I don't mind spenind 36,000 on one because I don't have too much use for elixir and I get it back from the raid anyway.
I have 1 barrack training lvl 3 dragons 24/7.
They are great for donations and they are also great to get in the core of a setup with my archer, barbs, gob, minion army.
Dragon up front, followed by a bunch of minions gets me almost always all the loot.
Dragons are the great equalizer. When I get destroyed, the dragon raid comes in for revenge. Two things, never use them for farming as it is too expensive and if you do use them, make sure there is enough loot to somewhat justify the raid.
its also great for defense, especially with the splash damage, the dragon can easily fry those barbs, goblins and archers
If you're maxing th8, you will eventually find yourself with lots of surplus elixer but still having a need to farm for more gold. Dragons are great then to quickly spend 500k-800k elix to prevent your elixer storages filling and then having your elixer collectors fill, which draws attacks.
But, otherwise, lvl 3 dragons are great. Since the arrival of the 3rd air def at th8 and 4th at th9, you need to be smart and deploy other troops to take out an air def or two, but a flock of 5+ dragons can still wipe most bases.
My base is not well equipped against air troops - I have air defences upgrading and they are all below L6...so, you would think that a full blown L3 dragon attack with 4 x rage spells would cause massive amounts of damage...
Well, you be the judge - Skip to 1:12 if you are not interested in my defence record...

My view is that dragons have their uses (namely guaranteeing you get at least one star from all bases) but for high level attacks, I prefer PEKKAS at L3...
why are so many people saying that dragons are no good for farming because the are too expensive?
maybe not at th9 but at all other th's, if your farming you should have too much elixir. So if they costed twice as much elixir it should not mather.
I evaporated millions of elixir this weekend alone.
The training time is a factor though.
Yes, elixir, or rather lack of elixir, is not a problem. However, it was not a well considered question and you actually answered it yourself...Dragons are a poor farming troop becasue they take too long to build and as the video above shows you, even when deployed en mass with rage spells, they might* not get all of the loot.
Granted, my base might not be one most farmers would attack but the fact is that dragons are not well equipped to raid resources. A farmer is much better off with giants, barbarians, archers and of course goblins since these can be better directed to where the gold it...
The problem with that attack is that the dragons were deployed in a bunch, rather than spread out. The black bombs wreck havoc on dragons if they're bunched up. L-shaped attacks would've worked much better, and 3x lightning to take out one of the AD would've been just as effective as the rage, and much, much cheaper.

Not for farming,
1 L3 dragon cost more than my WHOLE farming setup (200 troops)
Not efficient at all, Unless your trophy hunting which are more popular in.
If you want to increase your elixir returns after a battle
I'd highly suggest L5s half barbarians*100* half archers*100*, Very effective
And efficient total cost 30K 6K less than 1 L3 dragon.
My personal experience, And works wonders for me.
Ive tested in 1200~1399 only.
