I use a barcher build (100/100 split) and the elixir cost of this army is 30K. It is the most time effective army to build and constantly bring in gold. I often do keep a builder free, especially if i know I am going to have a lot of downtime so i can work on my L8 walls, but in the end I don't even try to raid for elixir and am always at/near max until I throw it away. Even using spells like a kid eats candy the elixir drain cant keep up. I even build dragon army's at night to waste the elixir but its not a viable farming strategy because of how long they take during the day.
At the end of the day, throwing away the elixir is the best option once I am about to log off.
