Since you do not want a fifth builder, the best thing to do would be to save them until you have a lot of resources but no free builder open. When that happens you can gem the last couple of hours on an upgrade and start a new one so you don't lose your resources overnight. You can also wait until you are anxious to finish an upgrade and gem the last few minutes :) In short, save the gems until you need a few extra resources, need to start a build fast, or you need a shield.

DO NOT INCREASE PRODUCTION, i'm not exaggerating, it literally ♥♥♥♥♥s you out of gems. See the link below.

A fifth builder is definitely worth it. I didn't think it was when I bought my fourth one but my mind quickly changed. IF you do not decide to buy a fifth builder however, just use your gems sparingly on various projects but patience is a key to this game.

ACTUALLY, patience is the more valuable thing you can have. It is a waste of gems to have 5 builders when you can use the gems to get more resources and upgrade other things.

5th builder gives you 25% more production rate to the existing 4 builders.
But as you said, you are comfortable enough to play with 4 builders which fit your play style and real life time, I guess.

Second best investment is Heroes! Once bought, they stay with you forever.
10,000 Dark Elixir for Barbarian King is 600 Gems.
40,000 Dark Elixir for Archer Queen is 1,400 Gems.

You should describe your village status, screenshot would be great, your Town Hall level, etc. to get better/more accurate suggestions.

This is incredibly wrong but whatever, think that if you want to.

5th builder is the best investment for your gems, no question... I understand that the OP said he didnt want to buy the 5th builder, but he needs to understand that his choice is a bad one lol.

if you don't want the 5th builder which is by far the best investment I would go for the troop upgrade because better troops get more loot which speeds up you town evolution, but by getting more gold you will probably need the 5th builder one day or another and then you will rethink your first choice and buy the 5th builder ;)

Reading comprehension is apparently not a strong point today.

Everybody is shoving this 5th builder a MUST idea when TS already stated the otherwise.
I myself am comfortable with 4 builders and are not keen on forcing myself to get another despite having the gems to do so. I simply enjoy the casual pace I am in now. Each time one of my builder is free, I have just the right resource to upgrade another. No more, no less.

So, apart from the obvious 5th builder, investing your gems in getting a Bararian King is a good choice, or Archer Queen if you've already gotten a BK.

Another good use of gems is to boost production of your troops when you're doing heaving farming once a while. Its definitely helps a lot especially if you need to rush on some needed elixirs or golds.

You can also speed up upgrade completion in the last minutes/hours so that you don't have to wait another, say 16 minutes in the toilet while your partner is waiting in the car.

Overall, spending gems on a lot of these minor points makes it worth your investment.
