Why the Star system is messed up

In a recent post, I debated with Dahimi about an idea that I had. He said something that made me realize COC rewards mediocrity.

1. Players are happy when they 1 star a base
2. Players boast and post youtube videos about 1 starring a base
3. People actually think 1 star is acceptable and feel they should be rewarded

1. How can you be happy that you 1 starred a base? Lets face it, you got the participation trophy of coc.....congrats you threw enough junk at the wall that something stuck. No skill involved. You know those trophy's they give 8 year olds for showing up to basketball practice and never really playing in a game....that is what you got.

2. Really? Look at me!!! I 1 starred this guy and let me show you how!! I will let you in on a secret...I let my 10 y/o son use my account just to see if it really took any skill to make it to Masters or stay there.... I ONLY LET HIM USE BARCH!!! He picked the opponents, deployed the troops and made it, he has only lost 3 attacks in Master since making it....the defenses are what is bringing him down.....so really.....you are posting that video? My 10 y/o can do better.

3. You should get NOTHING for a 1 star other than a draw...1 star is expected...that is it...if you want more.. bonus and trophy's...learn to BRING IT and get that second star..... As Dahimi said..."your base defense doesn't matter ... it is all about the attackers skill not your defense"....WHY REWARD A 1 STAR IF IT IS THE NORM?


Last I checked.....participation trophy's were for losers.....I don't want one....Gimme the "I worked my rear off to get this far" trophy....that is what I want....

Change the system

less than 50%/1 star - Defender gets win bonus and trophy's
1 star - No loss of trophy either side
2 star - trophy and win bonus
3 star - max trophy and win bonus

Keep rewarding the inept and mediocre....they are not welcome in my clan....move on...learn to raid better...learn to build a better base..

This is a very well written post. I agree with you completely that mediocrity is being rewarded. The only part that I disagree with is the part where you give a defensive loot bonus(at least that's how I interpreted). If that isn't the case, this is a great idea that has few flaws. Of this is the case, then that part shouldn't be there.

Thanks, I have a post up about the Defensive Win Bonus...should be on the first 1-4 pages..very heated debate...

I have to agree with this guy.

I didn't read the post its too long and its 4:15 am... But yeah I don't know if this point was covered but I 99% a base with nothing only a builders hut left using drags and hogs... And got 2 stars, some one could use barbarians and archers get 50% and the town hall and get the same amount of stars I got, it just seems a little unfair. (War circumstances)

I judge most of my battles less on stars and more on loot gain. I try to one star to maintain my trophy count, because a few battles I 'lose', despite possibly being a fantastic loot win. I 'win' most loot raids with one star, getting a few trophies for it, and 'lose' and lose most of my trophy gains in one battle.

The 50% threshold is rather abstract and kind of arbitrary. Victory and defeat can hinge on one more random building being destroyed, which can hinge on just a few hit points in that building. Two star wins hinges on the Town Hall being destroyed. You can flatten the whole base, but if the town hall is left, "Nope, sorry, your attack is only one star for your otherwise awesome efforts. Good bye, try again later."

When compared to loot raids, the trophy system is rather disjointed with what people see as a win or a loss.

I consider 1 star attacks a lose, but I do want to get bonus loot and with how hard loot is too get nowdays I think they should keep the starring system as it is.

I don't really agree with the OP because the age range includes players who are of a lower skill level. If you take away what little reward they get it takes enjoyment out of the game for them therefore you can lose players. Games are meant to be enjoyable so unless this game was meant for older ages don't try to take baby steps to make this an elitist game. I've had about enough of that from other games I've played. Besides, the trophy loss is meager.

Games are meant to be enjoyed and this isn't a hardcore game unless you are one of those to go hardcore at it. This game is light hearted, keep it that way. Rewarding Mediocrity or not games are meant to be enjoyed.

You also have to consider when younger players play they are more likely to be discouraged and put down the game than get a determination to try harder. So when you give them a little taste of victory you are more likely going to make them want to try harder meaning they may want to try for 2 or 3 stars.

The reward system is fine the way it is.

Agreed. Feels like a draw is appropriate. Also will stop TH sniping although that may cause a problem.

1 Star - DRAW...no one gains or loses anything
2 Star - Attacker gains trophy's and win bonus ....amount of trophy's based on percentage
3 Star - Max trophy's and the win bonus

any loot you raid you will keep...this is just a revamp of the win bonus/trophy win

This is for NORMAL game play....War is a different animal with different strategy...the only thing that matters in war is the star count so any star you can get is good. This would in NO WAY affect war game play or the war win bonus. This is strictly for normal game play.

Yes this would make it harder to gain trophy's....yes this would actually put emphasis on league levels.....yes this would actually make a player try instead of trying juuuuuuuust hard enough. The game is heading in this direction....1 star on a base in normal game play is just toooooooo easy.

The current system is lacking in challenge.....you are playing the game in "easy mode" right now. You are just too afraid to step up your game and actually try.

You have to consider what direction Supercell wants to go. I am on the other side of the fence not because I want to play on easy mode, I'm thinking on terms as a designer. A designer has to consider their player base and their player base invovles younger audiences otherwise that "9+" age range doesn't make sense. If you don't consider that then you leave out more people and the game becomes less popular to play.

With the age range you have to make this game more accessible to younger people and a reward system that is already set in place suits that just fine. Ive seen game communities go to ♥♥♥♥ when they take steps towards more elitist standards. The community becomes high in standards and becomes a tense environment which isn't enjoyable for a game. I personally don't want to see that because games are meant to be enjoyed and Id hate to see a light hearted game like CoC try and up the anti to lessen the accessibility for its player base.
This idea of yours for the reward system is a baby step towards that ideal.

If you want a more challenging game go find another game.

The game is challenging...it is the reward system that need a tweaking. My reward system that I proposed is not the end all-be all defined way it should be in the end. This could be tweaked/amended. Current game play is geared toward offense with NO emphasis on defense. If anyone new asks me for advice...I tell them go defenseless..... defense has been so far left behind in this game it serves no purpose. Hence the reason why so many people just leave their TH outside the base....why protect it? People only protect their loot for the most part..or make it a little harder to get to in the end. Some just set it out so people will raid their loot and leave their TH alone and not take the trophy's.....Was this truly what SC had in mind? Clan Wars was a step in the direction towards "defense matters".....in every other aspect of game play....defense means nothing.... Why is there no reward or emphasis put on having a strong defense?

How to truly win at COC

1. Upgrade Troops/spells/barracks/camps/lab/pump/mines/spell factory/TH only!! do not buy or upgrade any defense as it does not matter.
2. Raid continuously until you get the 10 min boot.
3. While you are booted....get raided once and lose a few trophy's and get a shield
4. Wait til shield runs out.. and start the raid cycle over

This is the current formula that will, if used, get you to the top of the leader board...that and a few gems...

If you are new and reading this..... GO DEFENSELESS!!!! Stick it to the man....their own people say defense doesn't matter....why spend the money on gems for defense? Why waste your time on defense?

Yes i am bumping my own thread...as this is now relevant to the update....dang you SC, stealing another one of my idea's and warping it.

I like the idea yet people only gain a few trophies if they get one star. And you're obviously a person that does nothing but 3 star people so what do you have against people that don't do that and just go for loot? You're not getting one star every attack are you? The way you came at it sounded like the whole system is messed up but its really not. Although I do think what you said about not gaining or losing any trophies for one star is good. I think they should make the system a bit different. Its a good concept.

At higher levels, I feel like it is all too easy to end up with no stars at all, and the main result of your idea would be that you are discouraging players from going after bases that are higher than their own. A TH8 that can manage to 1 star a max TH10 in champs or higher? That's not mediocre; that takes some serious skill. Even a max TH9 or early TH10 can have trouble getting 1 star on a max TH10, so what you'd be doing is forcing any of those players who wants to trophy push (or really anyone whose league bonus is high enough that it makes up a significant part of the resources they get from raiding) to search for and attack only bases on their level or lower, because unless I am certain I can get 2 stars, there would be no point in attacking.

I will say this though: II like the idea of trophies being based on more than just stars. I would still give a certain percent for the Town Hall, but the rest could be based on destruction, maybe something like this:

Town Hall = 30% of total trophies offered
50% = 20% of total trophies offered
60% = +10%
75% = +10%
90% = +10%
100% = +20% (full amount)
