So I just began my upgrade from th8 to th9 and wanted to run this idea by some people. I'm considering keeping only my current th8 defenses (except adding archer queen) and maxing them to th9 levels. I plan to save enough gold, elixir, and dark elixir to begin upgrades on archer queen, spell factory, and research lab immediately after th is finished upgrading. I never really make trophy push and consistently farm for resources. Anyway, your feedback is appreciated!
I just recently upgraded to th9. I built all the new building and got them to max th8 lvls. Then I started upgrading on th9 stuff. Get all the new toys and then upgrade. That's my opinion
Without the new toys you will get torn to shreds by fellow TH9s and now TH10s.
This would not be a permanent defensive strategy, just a way to gain an advantage during the upgrade processQuote:

The 4th wizard tower, extra archer, extra tesla, and extra AD really help even if they are low levels. If you hit th9 with full gold, including full collectors, you will have enough to immediately buy the new stuff plus both x- bows. After the xbows are complete, then worry about leveling up your new defenses to th8 max, THEN upgrading everything to th9 levels

Yes, level 1 xbows appear insignificant, but are your most important gold upgrade. Until you have them, you are marked as a noob th9, almost as bad as a th9 without a queen.
My recommendation (5 builders)
builder A: buy queen, start upgrade if possible.
builder B: start xbow
builder C: start xbow
builder D: start lab
builder E: get all the new stuff
Lab can wait a bit.
You our will want to get the new gold and exilir storages maxed ASAP. Too many people forget that, but having a fourth storage really protects your loot.
Also, getting camps upgraded really, really helps.
