Actually, they might snag some DE after an overnight cooking. (That is, if you don't need elixir)
If you need elixir or gold, dragons are not the way to go.
Dragons are not very good for farming. Using them in wars is a good attack strategy but not the way to go if farming.
Not good for farming, too long and costly, unless you have full elixir. Also, using a couple of dragons to complete an army is also useless...getting killed too easily by air defenses. Either you use full dragon army (8-10 dragons) or don't use any.
I'm at the point in TH8 where I have almost no further use for elixir, so it's coming out of my pores. So, I'll build big armies overnight or during the workday to get a good raid, or practice a different army comp, just to burn off some elixir. This morning I did a full dragon raid on another TH8 in Gold I with mostly full storages, and got 300K/400K/2K, which I felt was well worth it.
For now, I'm content to work on my walls and other defenses, and my lab upgrades. I've considered going to TH9 and just playing as a TH8 with an Archer Queen, but I'm not in a hurry.
I used Dragons to farm for gold to reach TH9, but started with around 3.5million elixir and ended with about 1million. I gained a good 2.8million gold, but I wouldn't do it again. You end up gemming both your barracks and spell factory for quick rage spells. It's easy but time consuming and expensive.
