the hour after maintenance breaks usually yield an unusual amount of collector raids 200-300k average 1-2 nexts. what happened was you were unlucky and tried to raid after it went dry. last halloween break, i was lucky to install COC immediately after the break, I boosted my barracks, gemmed all my attacks too and farmed 9 million gold and elixir (EACH) and 30k DE in about 1.5 hrs. i spent gems to free up my storages and builders as well.
but for normal raids:
what I do is push up to crystal league III looking for collector raids (elixir). Once I'm in crystal, I don't look too much for collector raids, but instead raid for DE (1200+ minimum) and I don't mind losing trophies in the process. Once I get down to Gold I, I push back up again.
