More Diversity in Troops Please

This is a nice game, but I can't help but feel put off by troops presented in this game.

1. Most of the human troops are white. Hog Riders are the only olive-coloured (non-white) troops in the game
2. All of the female troops are ranged combatants.

So, having checked out the list of what's been suggested before, I'd like to request that whatever is chosen has some thought behind the toons that represent the new troops.

Some suggestions I thought of include, all of which I've tried to limit to the fantasy genre and/or cultures that lived in a Clan-like structure:

• Black male melee warrior:Māori (not as tough as Giants, but faster?)
• White female melee warrior: Shield Maidens (not as strong as Swordsmen, but will only target Defences?)
• Dark skinned female mounted warrior: Amazons (please give them actual clothes)
• Asian Clan-based mounted warrior: Mongols (on cute little Mongolian ponies)
• Middle-eastern Troops: Ifrit (fiery winged men/women), Djinns (genies: ground troops the phase through walls?), Mamluk (mounted warriors), Roc (Giant Eagle that could pick up an enemy ground troop and droop them off the edge of the map?)

Again, these are only examples.

The main point of this should be, when the design team are looking at new introducing a new type of troop into the game, can we please see some diversity in the toons? More females on the front line and some non-white heroes to use in Battle and/or to protect our Village would be nice too.

Not everyone that plays this game is a white guy, so it would be nice to see other representations in the game.

It's kinda sad that Green skin got a look in before black or brown. ; )

Interesting twist on the troops. I like it but it veers away from certain aspects of the game in a way. :o

So Valkyries are ranged troops? What about P.E.K.K.A.s (Technically they're female :o).
My point is, this is a game. I am 100% opposed to racism or s*xism, but we are not playing Clash of Clans to fight racism, we are playing it to have fun! ;)
You have a valid point, but I disagree; with only the limited amount of troops as they are, and many of them not even human (Goblins, Minions, Lava Hounds, etc), it would be impossible to represent all races and genders accurately. Are all white men either short, buff, blond and like drooling,or huge and fat? No! We all know this! That is not the point of this game! If it offends you, try to take it with a grain of salt. There are many, many more games out there in which women are portrayed much more in-accurately. :D

I like the idea and it may be great for the future, but reading this makes me wonder if you think people feel the need to relate to the troops. (Keep in mind that i like the idea lol).

I would also like to mention that it looks like SEE has made a theme for coc which would be the resson why all the troops can relate to the same time epoch, Dragons which giants may not be real but they sure were in the tales just like the famouse Mr T riding a hog and the Sumo wrestler who always wanted to be a samurai aka the Pekka.

Oh and the Valkyries/pekkas are female melee warriors :o

I'd like to clarify that I'm not expecting every race/nationality to be represented, just that it would be nice if the game could expand their cultural palette.

We don't play Clash of Clans to fight racism or sexism, but that doesn't mean that the developers can't take steps to ensure that these elements aren't in their game.

I am against racism and sexism fully. But you just said not every race/nationality be represented? Then those ones that aren't.. What are they going to do? The developers have taken the steps to make sure that this isn't in their game. They aren't sexist because the women fighters do just as much as the male fighters do. The white skinned fighters do just as much as the other skinned fighters do. It may sound wrong.. But the color of their skin is just what it is called.. A color.. It doesn't make them better then one or worse than one.. It makes them unique.

What op needs to do is to stop viewing everything as oppression against a certain gender or race.

Diversity in this game isn't a problem until you choose to look at it that way.

Plus, there will be no end to introducing new troops if this was implemented. If we introduce, for example, new troops of Asian descent, which doesn't fit the setting of Clash Of Clans anyways, op would be complaining about he misrepresentations/ stereotypes involved in the new troop etc etc

I disagree that Asian toons don't fit the setting, as the game is called Clash of Clans, which implies to me different Clans (Vikings, Mongols, Magyar, African, Celts, etc...) at War.

Maybe I'm more flexible in my definition of what is and is not appropriate in a Fantasy setting.

If we do make changes to this particular concern about race and gender, people will be asking for even more unnecessary updates.

Let's take another approach at this and try to see what influence this idea may bring.

Let's say our first step is to introduce Asian troops *which is quite a vague idea imo*
We could first have a male Asian troop.
But oh wait! Why are female Asians left out? Let's introduce a new female Asian troop!
But wait there's more! how about we further diversify the game by introducing melee and ranged troops, for both Asian male and female characters!
That's 4 new troops right there.
Repeat the same process with black and brown skinned characters, and we have almost doubled the amount of existing troops.

Here's the best part: Balancing these troops!

Let's assume once more that all the new troops along with the old ones are magically balanced.
Is the issue resolved? Nope.
The next thing you know we'll have PETA attacking COC for abusing wild lives *black men riding on hogs* and feminazis signing up on change.org because COC encourages killing blonde women and red heads.

srsly. this is never gonna end.

Here's something to think about:

Is there a problem? *no. You may argue that there is a problem, but does this problem affect the gameplay at all?*
If implemented, does this update improve the gameplay whatsoever? *Perhaps, but it has nothing to do with race and gender.*

All in all, putting too much focus on "diversity" would bring more harm than benefit to this game.

Out of nine human(ish) toons, one isn't white. This is something I think can be improved upon, and I hope the developers take this into consideration when introducing new troops.

Some people might be happy pretending that only white people exist, but I think it would make the game less alienating and thus more fun, and that affects gameplay and player retention.

I love this idea! And I'm sure that SC has given this some thought as well; however, I think SC is trying to play it safe by not getting involved in this coversation publicly; they are in NO HURRY to adreess this. There base players are probably white, therefore the standard. Many white fans--not all--get scared or anxious when you talk about racial diversity. Many get very defensive...and offense ( a defense mechanism ). I think SC is trying to keep the base happy. They're making a billion off their white fan base without any real honest attempt at diversity; don't fix what's not broken. I feel that's the issue. They're simply not taking any chances with offending their main revenue base.

I actually saw this post a ways back and thought it silly. Possibly a troll thread that anyone would trouble themselves to worry about this sort of stuff. Wrong place and time. COC is just a game and this is getting way too deep.

I am chalking this up as not an issue. Like I have NEVER even thought about the game like that before. But, if (that is a big IF) this is a serious problem for some people, I don't think an introduction of a bunch of different troops is the solution. I think having different sprite options would be a better fit.

So you could pick the black sprite for your barb, the Asian sprite for your archer, the non ginger sprite for your valk. Boom everyone happy.

But yeah, I don't really care, lets not break the game though to solve a non-problem.

Also as far as the male/female ratio goes, I think we can safely assume dragons, lava hounds, golems and minions at the very least don't have genders, but really barbs, hogriders, and wizards are the only human males.

So, a valk with less hitpoints?

By swordsmen I'll assume barbarian? Could be interesting, but having a low housing space troop that targets defenses, even if it has less HP and less DPS might still be too strong. Besides, you'd have to make it like level 4-6 in the regular barracks and shift everything back.

• Dark skinned female mounted warrior: Amazons (please give them actual clothes)

Would they differ significantly from hogriders?

• Asian Clan-based mounted warrior: Mongols (on cute little Mongolian ponies)

Again, would they differ significantly from hogriders?

• Middle-eastern Troops: Ifrit (fiery winged men/women)

So the human version of a minion?

Djinns (genies: ground troops the phase through walls)

Somewhat interesting. HP, DPS, Speed, Favorite Target, Housing Space? Also, not human.


Mamluk (mounted warriors)

You seem to like mounted warriors.

Roc (Giant Eagle that could pick up an enemy ground troop and droop them off the edge of the map?)

Well that's not human, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to attack or defend.





The main problem I see is that the diversity issue would be better addressed by having skins you could buy for troops. For the most part your suggestions don't really seem to add a troop to the game that doesn't already exist, so they don't work from a gameplay perspective, which is the most important part. Plus, any new troops really need to fit into the level 7+ dark barracks, meaning they need to fit the dark theme, and they need to be something that would bring an added element to the game for TH9 and/or 10. I would think things like hydra, werewolf, or something that might soak up damage from infernos or temporarily slow down/freeze defenses.




On a side note I would like a 3 headed guard dog on my base.

I'm asian, I can see where this is coming from, but frankly, I personally don't care when I play the game. It's a game, that's all it should be. It shouldn't be a symbol, a representation or a perfect example of the world we live in today. Just a game.

I think the OP just wants to get into the role. CoC is an RPG game after all. It's nice to play characters that look somewhat like you...it makes the role you play more engaging and fun. I think that's reasonable and understandable.

I was thinking about this the other day when I was looking at the troops. I'm not even black and I feel like there should be another black troop. I agree with this. :thumbsup:

RPG? No, tower defense strategy.

It would be nice to add a little variety, though I do agree it could get out of hand. All flags arent covered so we see people requesting for theirs. It will probably be similar if they make this about race, though more heated I suppose.

In the end, if they are going to continue to make troops they might as well switch the skin color up. I do like your ideas for troops.

Supercell ahould put atleast one troop for each of these races:
Elves
Dwarves
Orcs


And,the Hog Rider is not really African,he is mullato since he has blue eyes;only Germanic type people have that eye color....

There are people that are always walking around looking for what issues they might be able to have because 'having issues' makes them feel personally important. They have not become wise to the world in any way that they would know when they should have a filter on that. The Op and several people here lack that filter. Its a shame because they destroy the credibility of their own causes with the lack of judgment they apply.

There is no cause to fight for here. its a game. it was poor judgment to even try raising this issue (and exposing yourself to every comedian that comes along) and poor judgment also practiced by those that are trying to jump on what they perceive is some bandwagon.

Note that I am not questioning the point itself because I don't. I am only speaking to how silly it was to start a thread on it in a game forum. If you don't agree go look at al the fun that has been poked and who can blame those folks for the easy opening you gave them. Whatever point you wanted to make you have undermined its importance in the bigger picture.

There's nothing to be nervous about. It's a legitamite issue to some. If it's not to you that's OK too! It's called Freedom of speech. You should get used to it. Relax.

Who says CoC troops even have races? They could all be from the same magical land, where 'barbarian' is an ethnicity, as is 'wizard' and 'archer.' Who says those that appear human are human? Obviously Lava Hounds are supposed to emulate dogs, but barbarians are stocky "creatures" that all look the same and have literal helmet hair, don't wear shirts, and hit the closest thing to them with a sword. Heck, their eyebrows grow into their hair helmet. Archers have purple hair (eventually covered by a green hood or darkened and with a crown) and, again, all look the same to one another. If we expect this game to abide by our humanly rules of race and ethnicity, shouldn't we first ask it to give the characters reasonable physical human traits if they are indeed humans at all? Them not being human would explain why they all look the same within their "type" of troop.

This whole diversity thing sounds rediculous to me. I mean... I find the hog rider to be odd in the game. The game has a very nordic theme to it, ie. The dragon looks like the nordic types and not the asian ones and goblins and valkyries and giants... Etc etc

I'd rather they put up a new troops like (white) dwarf, or (pale) troll or (white) frost giants(maybe fire giants).

But to even suggest a fantasy setting to cater to the diversity of the real world is rediculous and no you do not have a fexible or expanded viewpoint of fantasy settings.

If you bring up real life diversity then why not stop at people what about architecture? Let all the worlds cultures be represented!

I am sorry for the rant. There are enough fantasy settings that has been ruined by this stupidity.

ps. You can literally type in any language you want in clash of clans and I think thats good enough

I think you are way ober your head. This game is obviously medieval themed, so, those kind of warriors don't fit the game. Medieval times are known for the battles and a lot of mysticism surrounding them, and that's were all the troops came from, the spells being of a more magical side, but still, they have a place in the game. Focus your thoughts to that time, and stay in that time. All the people in that time were Caucasian because medievial times were almost exclusively in Europe. Given that some wars were fought against muslims and the Huns, you might have some ideas there. I'll give you Asians for the Huns and Muslims

It's totally reasonable, and I do agree to an extent. I think my problem with your statement is that you can still get into a game if you aren't of the exact race of who you're playing as or "commanding," in the sense of how CoC is. I don't think skin color determines how relatable a character can be to you. Obviously Supercell (probably) isn't going to implement a new character for every ethnicity out there, but I do believe more diversity is never something to be shied away from. Like I said, I agree to an extent. I was simply bringing to attention some of the other things that could come into question when discussing race in the context of Clash of Clans. I'm definitely not overwhelmed, just explorative :-)

Correct, "YOU" can get into the game if YOU aren't represented. That's you ( or whoever else you know that feels that way). Everyone is different; chalk it up to diversity. Some gamers like to play characters that somewhat represent what they look like. That's why some games have customizations. It's immersive gameplay; it's all in the spirit of role-play. It's all in the spirit of fun!!!

CoC developers should be flattered that people all of the world from diverse backgrounds want to play their games. It's an amazing accomplishment.

If you even had half a brain you could tell that there is already a variety of gender and race in the clash of clans characters, most of them are fantasy based characters like wizards and giants they aren't based on real humans at all so i have no idea why this post was made. The fact that the lack of gender and racial variety angers you is honestly just plain stupid, Just because the majority of the characters look white means nothing! Who cares! Most of the developers and artists may have been white and its natural to create characters in ones image. You are a worthless liberal, tree hugging moron that doesn't deserve the privilege of breathing on this planet. Anyone with common sense would know that skin color barley effect the worth of a human, the illusion that race does effect worthy is culture which usually matches with a persons skin color.
