Does loonian without spells work! I have level 4 balloons and level 1 minions!
It all depends what base you're attacking.
If it is a TH7 (even fully maxed) then no.
If it is a TH8 that has underleved AD and WT then you may only need a heal spell or two.
If it is a developed TH8 with level 5+ AD and 3 level 4+ WT then you will probably need two heals and a rage.
Get your minions levelled up ASAP as they help a lot with cleaning up.
I started balloonion one week ago and haven't used anything else. I got two three stars in a war against almost maxed TH8s and I usually bring in 200k/200k/500DE resources when farming. Train 2 barracks with 7 balloons each, 2 barracks with 6 balloons each, train 35 minions and brew 2 heals - 1 rage.
The full time takes about 1hr 45 min if you have level four spells.
WATCH OUT for CC troops and try to get your balloons to trigger air bombs as they instakill all your grouped up minions. Also keep minions away from WT.
P.S. I use level 5 balloons and level 2 minions, going to be lvl3minions soon.

Spells REALLY help with balloonion
I rely on spells to heal my balloons after a round of air bombs or dealing with a good wizard tower
I would never use balloonion without spells

th9 balloonion is probably the best time to use loonion, but other ths can still use it.
When I loonion, it obviously takes a bit to train the loons.
What I do is train heal spells. They are less effective then rage, but they take less time. So, no matter what, I will have at least 1 heal or so with me at all times.

Loonion without spells will be a suicide if ya are going in clan wars. If you are upto farming, then you gotta take more of minions,around 35-40 to grab the resources.I always prefer 2 heal and at least one rage to tackle up the air missiles.
Loonion without spells (with level 4 balloons) won't get you far, if you face a red bomb before a Wizard tower will fry your balloons and after smashing Wizzard tower surely will die all before reaching 2-3 more defenses. so your minions will be able to take only a few resources before dying on other defenses. To use this tactic, you need heal spells, healing your balloons when they go red will allow you to 3* most th7's, if you place a heal between defenses they will be able to travel from one defense to the next without dying and keeping full health. I use loonion (lv6 loons, lv4 minions) without spells most attacks, but always take heal spells with me and use only when near 50% or when near of reaching a elixir storage and won't be able to take without healing remaining loons or minions
