EDIT: Clan castle is a very important upgrade as well. It provides an overall boost to both offence and defence in one single upgrade. After that, I would use gold on higher level xbow and wizard tower, but I personally used most of my builders on elixir upgrades. The sooner to have dark elixir drills done the better.
Gold: xbows -> clan castle (unless your clan sux) -> defenses

I put a lot of effort in to getting my drills to level 6 pretty early. It really paid off for me. With both at level 6, you are getting almost 5k de each day. This makes it almost too easy to upgrade heroes and research de troops.
As an example, I was upgrading golems from level 2 to level 3. While doing this, I was able to upgrade my BK from level 12 to level 13 (costs 55k de) and I STILL had more then enough de to immediately upgrade my golems to level 4 when the research was finished. During this time, I was also the only one in my clan with level 5 hogs, so I was supplying them constantly for clan wars. I don't do a whole lot of de farming. I just kinda pick it up as I look for gold/elixir. So doing these drills has been a huge benefit for me.

I started with All new Buildings (only one Xbow, didn't have enough gold) and upgrade Lab. Continued with second xbow and upgraded spell factory. Next was camps (still one missing, this week on queue). Next update will be CC with gold and Dark Barracks with elixir (I'm a noob th9 too). After this plan to gold upgrades to put all defenses to TH8 level and max Elixir Drills with Elixir. Next stage didn't think on it yet.Quote:

All of your builders should be doing elixir upgrades and you should be dumping gold into walls if you're active farmer. If you can't keep up with the amount of elixir needed then do some defense.
I made the mistake of starting to upgrade my de drills before army camps. Being in a clan that wars constantly, this was a bad decision on my part because I struggled to take on other th9's with only 200 troops. So I stopped doing drills when I had one at level 5 and one at level 4. Got all my army camps done and then went back to doing de drills.
I'm not a heavy farmer, but I still made enough de from wars and farming to get my queen up to level 5 before my drills were all done. Once your drills are done, heroes and researching becomes easy. If you are researching elixir troops, like L6 barbs/archers/loons/giants, then you will be upgrading your queen like crazy. If you are researching de troops, you will have to do some extra farming to keep those hero upgrades going.
The beginning stages of any TH upgrade should always be economy. Unfortunately that is elixir intensive. personally i would do cc first with gold. If you war this will allow you to bring one of those max golem things into war. Best advice is to farm like hell and get your camps upgraded asap(obviously SF and lab come first).
