Anti-repeat thread idea

This is stupid.

I used to very heavily moderate the "Wishlist" on a forum for a game similar in style to Clash of Clans, and we had the same problem there. Repeat after repeat, and the fresh, good ideas always fell off the front page. We didn't have any way to combat this besides instantly locking these repeat threads, but they still take up space on the front page.

These ideas are exclusive to one another, I'm not suggesting all of them be implemented

1) Moderate new threads

Have new threads be checked by mods or staff before becoming visible to the general public. This ensures that repeated threads do not get posted at all

A glaring problem here is that it would be a full time job. Someone would have to be checking this subforum quite often to deal with new threads

2) Disallow "Fresh Spawn" to create new threads (Most popular by a landslide)

A lot of repeated threads are by new members, and forcing them to view and comment on existing threads before posting a new thread might alleviate the problem.

Problem here is that it might encourage spamming to get them to post their "new" threads.

3) Auto-lock low-rated threads

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume this isn't possible, but if a new thread could be auto-locked after receiving a low enough rating (after a certain number of total votes), that would allow repeat threads to be forced down, but it would not prevent them from showing up in the first place. And this is quite a complex idea

I don't really expect any of this to happen, but I think I'm just trying to make a point here. I like seeing new ideas and talking about them, but the Idea forum is getting really...well, it's not much fun when most of the threads are duplicates. Even ideas that aren't ruled out are done to death (Heroes usable during war), and I just want it to stop.

So this is an "Idea/Feature Request", but it's for the forum, not the game

I'm all for number 2- 1 is tad difficult to do. We have a lot of users that use these forums and monitoring every new thread that pops up is... well- difficult is an understatement. We have loads of new threads pop up every hour!

Not very keen on 3. either tbh.

1 is being currently Implemented by a few members around checking, of course this is after post so...

Long time supporter of #2. Several ways it could be implemented that would work.

I would love to see #2 occur.

However it should time limited not post limited.

New accounts should have to wait 48 hours before they can create new threads anywhere on the forum.

Furthermore, new accounts should not be allowed to post in the ideas section at all for a week.

I think 1 would be feasible if only applied to the Idea and Feature Requests forum. This is where the majority of repeated posts occur and where most new members frequent. It's spam really. They sign up, make one post for sharing resources, then never post again.

yeah, I have been thinking the same. My efforts to explain why its not a great idea instead of just telling them its a repeat or ruled out is to discourage them from continuing. In the example you gave there are three guys cross pollinating.

2 is my favorite as well. I realize 1 is near impossible and 3 is more trouble than it's worth, but I just wanted them out there

The problem with a time limit is that people could create an account, see they have a time limit, and then just wait it out. Ideally, they would spend that time perusing the forums and reading, but unfortunately, I think that's too optimistic. Some combination of the two might work though. Minimum post requirement AND a timer

I think you are right. A lot of times the posts are from someone that has a mad on about some issue. They tend to be emotional and not well considered before the post. Forcing a 48 hour cool off period will allow them to calm themselves and give it a good rational think before they move forward. I don't just mean wacky posts. Even if in the end that have a really valid issue and a good solution it will always help if they think for a couple days before running with it.

It has nothing to do with superiority. I creeped on the forums months before I made my account, and even then, I only posted once in a while to get a handle of the forums. Most people don't do that though, they make an account and proceed to whine and complain with no thought at all. Without running the numbers, I'd say a minimum of 9/10 repeat threads is by " fresh spawn". That's not some sort of forum racism, that is a fact.

Take the time to become part of the community here and you will be much better received than breaking every rule with your first several posts and then name calling when you don't like the answer you get. If you take the time to do some reading you will find that people who take the time to be articulate and reasonable are well received even if they do start by breaking the rules with their first post. There is evidence of both all over this forum. Introducing yourself to a new group of people by being rude and combative will rarely win you many allies in life or on the internet.

We "elitists" and many new users have come on and made some great suggestions. It has proven impossible to keep them on the front page because they get pushed off by drivel so quickly.

How would you even know if good ideas were posted?

All the good ideas are dwarfed by the sheer number of bad ones. As you say, you've got numbers. History shows you aren't more creative. You even tried to use the fact that lots of you post the same thing over and over again (the opposite of creative) as evidence that SC should listen.

I have several ideas in my signature, some more popular than others, and some very well thought out. None of them involve me asking for something that is ruled out in a sticky, and none of them have duplicates can be found on the front page at any given time. But they get pushed off the front page by threads like those I highlighted.

If that were true we wouldn't be having this conversation . Posting the same, previously ruled out, previously post 1000 times , idea is not creative..... It's proof that no one reads the stickies.

Not saying that every fresh spawn idea or post fits this, but the vast majority do.

Just for fun im going to screen shot this so in six months when you lose you patience with some new former who is flooding the first page with " new ideas " I can get a chuckle out of reminding you...

That would only work if they also administered a test, even then that wouldn't work so well.

A time limit in my belief would be the best option. It'd provide a necessary cool down period for folks who basically get steam rolled and then post on here to rant while at the same time, hopefully giving them some time to become acquainted enough with the forum to be able to post intelligently.

Personally I don' mind the "You must post XX times before you can create a new thread" idea. It ensures that the person has had a chance to see what is already in the forums and is at least temporarily engaged with the community. Just another means to the same end. I don't want to silence them, just reduce the number of useless new threads.

Scrolling to the bottom never works though. Seen that too many times in other arenas.

look, no one wants to become a historian of this thread to post a new idea. the idea is evidently not present in the game and is "new" to person posting it, so they put it up as a suggestion. if you are already familiar with this idea or even thought of it yourself, feel free to skip right over it. but no one is going to comb through all this garbage to make sure no one ever suggested their idea before. that seems unreasonable.

just sticky the good stuff to the front or sort by rank/popularity. if your idea is really so great and worthy, it won't get lost in the dung heap.

First, it's people like you that create all of this "garbage" in the first place. Second, you don't have to comb through it as the pile of garbage is so high that a simple search (or reading the first page of posts) will reveal it.

True..... That leaves us with a minimum time before they can start a new thread.... Or maybe create a sub formum for new members to post in and restrict posting to that sub forum for the first week. Then they can post repeated ideals to thier hearts content... Just don't index it to the " new post " search . They would be able to read the forums, search for solutions etc... But not start new threads or post on the main boards.

Okay, so you have either a bunch of pages full of stickies and new ideas are started on page 43, OR you have an enormous sticky full of ideas that no one has the time to read. Is that what you want? Every actual new idea to be stickied? The front page has the most recently discussed ideas on it, which will be discussed until they're no longer posted on enough to stay on the front page...or that's how it would work if there weren't multiple threads asking for the same thing every 20 minutes.

I'm not asking to silence these people. If it's so important that they get their repeat ideas heard, they can bump an older thread with the same idea on it

No. If the new idea is bad discouraging it is the right thing to do. Encouraging bad ideas will always produce a bad result. Sure you might make the person with the bad idea feel good for a few posts but one of two things will happen.

1) The bad idea gets implemented because everybody lied and said it was good. Now everybody wishes they had been truthful.
2) The person who did feel all warm and fuzzy because they were encouraged realized everybody was jerking their chain and the idea really is bad.

Both of these are bad outcomes. It is wrong discourage good new ideas. It is right to discourage bad new ideas.

The way the boards work now, all those so called new ideas almost fill the first page, so you have to go to page two or three to find a thread worth opening... We had the same issue with loot threads, so they had to start dumping them into a single stickied thread just to clear the board of them....

I don't know if discourage is the right word here. I fully support the discouraging of repeat ideas. Bad new ideas should be discussed and improved on. Say why it's bad, but suggest improvements.

This forum is meant to discuss new ideas. That can't happen with old garbage coming in on all sides.

Naaa. Really there are two issues with "fresh spawns". First is something bad happens to them in game, and they immediately come to the forum and rage about it. The 48 hour waiting period for new threads would help curb that.

The second issue is they think they have come up with the next best award winning idea. This is almost never the case as it actually takes a good amount of time on the forum as well as in game to have a full understanding of all the various mechanics involved. After all you have employees of a multi-billion dollar company who paid to think about these things day in and day out. Generally speaking if a mechanic works a certain way, you can bet it's for a good reason.

This means they either won't care enough in a week to post their nonsense, or maybe...just maybe they'll lurk long enough to realize that what they are posting is nonsense.

Is it possible these measures could actually block the next great idea? Possibly, but highly doubtful. It's a risk I think the community would be willing to take.

good and bad are personal opinions though. and everyone has their own opinion. so let all ideas come forth. if the idea is deemed lame by the community so be it, but at least it was proposed. i am against discouraging people, but i agree ideas considered bad should not be encouraged. unless YOU think it good regardless of what the community thinks.

The lightning rod is already in the existing ideas list. Stickied. Creating a new sticky wouldn't solve the problem, it would just make one more sticky that those people aren't reading

so how does it get decided what is a good idea or a bad idea?

if the moderators decide, have them cherry pick the good ideas and move them to a new area that only mods can create new posts on. let commenting by the masses continue on this new forum though.

if it is by rating, seems like high rated posts could be moved automatically to a new area once they are high enough.

popularity isn't a good indicator though. a lot is back and forth arguing about good and bad aspects of the new idea.
(just see my lightning shield post. no one liked it, but i tried to defend it. it devolved into a debate about th7 vulnerability). sometimes the mass of replies only point out it is a rejected or previously posted idea.

If you're referring to the sticky, the moderators talk with the devs and the devs provide lists of ideas that they are either considering or ruling out.

They did that. That's what the sticky is. It's a moderator only editable list of both the ideas deemed good or worthy and the ones that were not. This is further enforced by the moderators routinely deleting new threads that are listed in the ruled out section. The problem is that the moderators are volunteer and not paid, thus there isn't nearly enough coverage to deal with the volume.

I wish SC had paid moderators, but that is an entirely different topic.

It's by rating in a sense that the moderators held a series of polls where the forum was invited to select the ones they liked the most. The ideas were then ordered within the various categories in the sticky based on that feedback.

They did that. That's what the sticky is. It's a moderator only editable list of both the ideas deemed good or worthy and the ones that were not. seems like you mods need some software to quickly scan through all the posts and round up duplicates using some word recognition techniques. that is painful to do it manually. i feel your pain.

maybe it could be done using advanced search somehow? i can't search just the suggestions/ideas forum only though. it searches the whole site.

I agree with you but loads of new people instantly post without reading stickies about gem collectors and other new ways of getting gems and this is extremely annoying

You can. Do an advanced search and up top there's a single content tab (or similar), and you can filter by sub forum there, that's what I do. It allows you to search in a specific section rather than the whole site which I agree, can be a real pain in the butt

I understand where you are coming from and agree to a point. Some new ideas I have seen are bad on the surface and some seem ok at first glance and get support for about 5 minutes, then the problems show themselves. At this point unless a workaround can be found it is best to just abandon the bad idea and discourage further "but but but, I WANT it!" justification.

Good and bad can be personal opinions and they can be just plain fact. Some ongoing discussions (opt-out, zapping, etc.) are very opinion based and there are arguments on both sides. That is one reason why I and other active members of the community continue to provide our opinion on both sides of those conversations. Those who take the time to read the extensive conversations for and against what they originally saw as their idea will see that the active community members may disagree vehemently but continue to have constructive dialog on the topic.

Other ideas (sharing resources, troops that don't die come back, etc.) are bad. There is no opinion. I understand that there are games where those systems do work but the core game mechanic of CoC does not support those dynamics and they would destroy this game in very short order. Even the people who continually repost those ideas admit that it won't work after a brief reminder. Lots of people post new ideas that would make it very easy for them to repel every attack by anybody. They fail to consider that everybody else will have it to. Those are not good ideas and never will be.

Don't know if its been said yet but:
1: Not enough mods round the clock, would severely limit the amount of threads
2:Would obviously lead to spamming (may be done covertly in a way which doesn't violate ToS), also prevent new people from having a 'voice' to some extent
3:Similar to above, an idea is still an idea, it still has the right for people to discuss it, if no one wanted to then it will die by itself anyway

I agree to something needs to get changed. I'm pretty fed up with
all these same threads aswell..

Maybe we need to be able to Log-In with our E-mail linked to our CoC account.
That way this Site can see how mutch time we've spend in our account and making
and thread on this forum needs you to require a certain amount of time played.

This way people can comment on threads but not make spam threads like these anymore.

I agree that there should be a limit like #2. Even though they might post rubbish, many of these fresh spawn are trying to help and are more inclined to post actual comments. In any case, most of them will probably see another thread shouting the exact same thing they were. (I'm not normally optimistic but I'm willing to give it a shot) Another possible solution would be to have a large blinking red text appearing when fresh spawn post a topic (a little harder to code...) to remind them to read the stickies and that failure to do so can lead to deletion of their thread.In any case, something should be done about these because I'm as sick as the next person about these "ideas".

I've tried the highlighted sticky thing with blinking red and yellow arrows. It just makes it so that people ignore something even more obvious. What I've learned is that there are people who will read the stickies and there are people who won't. Anything related to the stickies is not an adequate solution, unfortunately

Maybe a way to filter the search where you can exclude threads started by forumers with less that X number of posts...while this might mean I miss out on a great idea posted by a new member, I'd be willing to take that chance if it means I can click " new posts" and not see fifteen threads about war opt out or (prohibited word)
