This is unfortunately true, I have to admit I did it kind of for the shield too. But maybe that's what we are nowadays, so good they gave us the shield so more people would participate.

This is exactly why i didnt buy one. I hate donation fads. Just like ALS, don't make it an 'everyone's doing it so should you' type event. Make like breast cancer awareness, but their products and your money will go to a cause. Keeping the red shield is the product you buy and you're happy knowing that some of the proceeds went to an amazing cause. But if it's a 'look the whole AppStore is doing it so why not you too' I really don't feel the need to donate. Make the shield permanent and I will buy the gems for all 3 of my accounts

This is about the people GIVING away something and having a little token to SHOW SUPPORT not getting REWARDED...
