It is kind of frustrating for me to lose few hundred k of each resources each time I log off. At the end of the day, I find that I farm less then I lost.
I wonder those TH9s did you able to upgrade without gemming? I was able to do that till TH8.

I just sit and wait on my collectors.... i have waited almost 2 years to get to the start of th9! 40 more walls to 8

Never have I had a problem getting loot for upgrades. I was even able to keep my 5 builders active pretty much the entire time through TH9.
It entirely depends on your offensive capabilities. If you have the troops to farm with loot is cake. Your defenses also help you to somewhat keep that precious loot when you need to save up 5-7mil for an upgrade.
Most people that seem to have issues with this, tend to be rushers. They either screwed themselves by not having the offense to farm higher bases, or their defenses and walls are so bad it's easy taking for looters. I always maxed my respective TH, so I never really had an issue.
End of the day it's all about raiding more than you lose and having the offenses to farm loot. Defense matters, but not quite as much. Farming bases with exposed TH's also allow you to get those shields from people looking for a quick snipe.
Instead of using gems, I'm able to keep upgrading as a TH9 by paying with hours of my life daily instead

Nope. I need to gem my barracks. As i am pretty much busy adult, having farm time of 8 hours equivalent (2 hr boost) is really important. And i am sure u lost a lot becoz u r either didnt put yr TH outside or just rushed your base w/o maxed out def. I farmed at c2 just fine. Currently farming for lvl 10 walls. :)
