Ask his clanmates to give him a cheap shield.
He leaves the clan (temporarily), and gets a friend from the clan to attack him and leave at 40%. That way he won't lose trophies and get a 12 hour shield.

Quick Flammy, get a Garytao interview next. We don't want any more Jorge Yao interviews. He's so freaking boring.
Ya Flammy, the way Jorge Yao plays to stay at #1 is a disgrace to the COC community, let's focus on the true fighters up top instead. We should value skills and dedication over being a p*ssy
JORGE YAO, COME OUT AND FIGHT LIKE A MAN, if you are one :p
Yes true, but if George’s clan mate doesn't find him on the first or second try...he will already have been attacked.
My guess is that Georges clan mates log off and let him attack them. Then, he tells them when he is going to log off and they execute a revenge on Jeorge stopping at 40-ish%. That's a safer bet....
Typically, It takes me about 10 seconds (or less) after I log off to get attacked and I'm only at 3320-ish cups. Most of the time I am attacked instantaneously after I log off...
Cheers,
Huddy
Well if this is the answer then how easy is this for SuperCell to check.
They must know when people log off because they give you a free small shield for disconnects.
Wouldn't be hard to see if a player is online for days and then all of a sudden logs off and attacked by someone in his own clan - same for a revenge.
I'm guessing they'd be clever enough not to use the chat to say "OK, i'm logging off now - hit revenge!" and would use a separate IM client. But you never know, might be worth checking the clan chat.
I think maybe a good solution to fighting this strategy for supercell is broadening the range in which players can battle other players on trophy count. Think about it, most players in master have maxed out defenses or close to it and they have the same troop capacity and level troops as the top players and this way they battle more and it's harder to give free shields.
