Simply they let you clear their air defenses easily.
I like making minions when I want my army to finish faster.
Half my army is composed of flying troops; 2 dragons and 20 minions. I tend to stay away from bases that have their air defenses near the center. Those that have them near an edge are easy to dispose of with giants and archers.
Dragons and minions are good balloons maybe i guess at level 5 or 6?? and healers now because of the extra Air Defence at TH8 and 9 it's rare
Dragons and minions are meh in the metagame. Healers and balloons are pretty useless.
I honestly wish they'd buff healers and balloons far more. :(
air troops are useless since the new updade. I used to attack with minions and dragons before, but now not anymore.
Take a look at the best players, they are not using dragons anymore.
I think Supercell introduced the +1 air defence, to force players to use (pay for) golem.
I rarely attack th9's for this reason unless they are premature. The big advantage for using air troops is they make walls completely useless. I've had too many bad experiences with wallbreakers not destroying the correct walls that I really don't use only ground troops for my army. Should those stupid wallbreakers not break trough to the center, your troops will just be sitting there banging against the walls and get wiped out
It really depends on the level of player who you are attacking. In my case, I attack with 7 giants 7 wizards 22 barbarians 5 wall breakers 2 healers and like 4 balloons. I will change this when I get dragons, and for my level (xp level 50 trophy level 1100 TH level 7) air units are still viable but I would recommend using them in parallel with ground troops.
