Defense buildings in a 6 tile radius around the Lookout have an increased range as follows:
cannon: +3 tiles
archer tower: +2 tiles
tesla: +2 tiles
mage tower: +1 tile
mortar: +1 tile
x-bow: +2 tiles
The Lookout allows for more flexible Layouts when positioning defense towers.
The Lookouts weakness is its low hitpoints. If the Lookout is standing in the outer layer, attackers may want to hit the Lookout first.
Lookouts within the inner layer might become subject to lightning spells. Depending on the kind of defense tower inside the Lookouts radius flying units might try to take it out (if there are cannons, mortars, ground-directed x-bows)
