TH8 vs TH8 - what are best strategies?

Our clan has seen a bit of transition lately with several TH7 going to TH8, and a higher number of TH10 and especially TH9 than before. But we have also suffered 4 defeats in last 5 wars, 2 of them pretty close defeats. This has been especially surprising because it comes in the wake of 12 continuous war wins before that, many of them close ones.

The biggest problem I am seeing is the inablity of most TH8 people to 3 star TH8 bases that are max or close to max.

What are the best strategies for actacking TH8 as another TH8? I am asking because there has been some debate regarding this in the clan recently. I always thought that lvl 3 Dragons (with some loons or hogs if need be), lvl 4 Hogs and GoWiPe with lvl 3 Pekka were the most powerful attacks. Are they capable of reliably 3 starring other well designed TH8 bases or will we have to accept some 3 stars and rest 2?

Also, what Giant Wizard? I think it will be throughly underpowered but maybe I am wrong? What about loons+minions? Do they work at TH8?

I could use some suggestions here. We do 50vs50 or 45vs45 wars usually.

Thanks for replying, but won't the dragons get eaten by CC wizards if you don't have any archers etc to divert their attention?

I have generally preferred to take wizards to clean up after the hogs, but if they get unlucky with a bomb, it can make 3 stars impossible unless a good number of hogs survived.

Has about 65-75% to 3 starred any TH8

Thanks for the reply. I use mass dragons with 3 lightning or 3 rage depending on the base and I have a similar percentage of 3 stars as you.

So mass dragon is still the most reliable strategy at TH8?

Interesting thread. Though it has at least one problem that pops up for me: Personal preference.

5 Wizards and 1 Archer in CC
3 Healing spells (sometimes 2 heal and 1 rage, depending on a base)

Mass Dragon
10 Dragons
1 Dragon and 5 Archers in CC
BK
3 Rage spells

Having three options to war with gives you experience and possibility to save up on something. Plus it is a lot more fun!
I know how to use those three, so I prefer to use them. Though what works against which base and what you are better in than another, is matter of personal preference.

I suggest you to try to find out new strategies as well. Test it out in multiplayer. No, not against farming bases.
Making a army combination is about maths and logic, not too difficult.

Plus your clanmates should go to higher leagues and use armies against maxed th8's outside war as well. Gives experience!

Dont use lightning spells with drags, its a waste almost all the time.
Gowipe or hogs also work really well, in the end as a th8 hogs have the highest chance of three imo.

I don't agree. The combination of air and ground like that just isn't the most efficient way to tackle a base. You are now attacked by every defense, and every trap. No th8 in my clan runs that type of attack, but that type of attack is run against us all the time, almost every war. It rarely succeeds.

Our best TH8 has 3'd many max TH8s and its always with a mix of dragons, typically 6-9, and the rest lvl5 balloons with 5 lvl6 balloons in the clan castle. He very rarely lures, he has 450 war hero now, he almost always gets 6 stars per war. All by air, all with the above troop comp, always with 3 lightning, always the balloons are dropped to target the remaining air defenses.

When he gets 2 stars its from what he calls "death by 1000 cuts", because the remaining archer towers and teslas just slowly take out the dragons.

Honestly his success rate is north of 95% at 3 starring TH8s as a TH8. I would bet that his longest streak of continuous 3 stars is 30 or 40 or more. Almost always attacking the 2 strongest TH8s our opponent has.

I cannot recall a single time that our best TH8 got just 1 star, ever, with the dragon/balloon strategy once he started using it. Not a single time did he fail to get the town hall against any TH8...

Lvl4 hogs will flatten any TH8...

Drag3 with Loons in cc will flatten any TH8

Gowipe is a bit tricky.. but 2 stars is definite

Mass dragon w/rage
105 dragoon (10 drag 5 lvl 6 cc loons rage or heal/rage)
813 dragoon (8 drag 8 lvl 5 loons 5 lvl 6 CC loons three Lightning)

You can 3 star any th8 with those three strats

I'm not personaliy a fan of th8 GoWiPes I rarely see them 3 star bases usually a solid two...but if you can't 2 star a th8 with dragons then there are problems :p


I've also seen th8 HoLoWi or HoLoion or (or some combo or HoLo) but those are scary with lvl 5 loons

So basically it boils down to Mass Dragons (with some loons if need be), lvl 4 Hogs and GoWiPe, as expected. I guess some of our TH8 are having trouble getting 3 stars vs max TH8 because we have very few hoggers.

Mass drags work well on alot of th8s but lvl 6 ads can wreck them.

Hogs work nearly on all th8s if you can trigger or avoid the big bombs.

Gowipe works very well too but its easy to run out of time.

I personally like to use variations of hog attacks. Like a golem a pekka wizards and a handfull of hogs. Or gowipe with 5 or more hogs. Get creative.

I'm currently facing the same situation. Almost maxed TH 8 - sometimes mass dragons don't cut it. I found the 105 and 813 dragloon attacks a couple of days ago on YouTube. Very interesting, but we don't have level 6 balloons in our clan.
I've started experimenting with GoWiPe (lv 1 golem, lv 3 pekka, lv 5 wizards), but only get consistent 2 stars against a strong TH 8. Level 2 golems next week ;)

One mistake I already discovered during the last clan war - bringing the main force of wizards too early. I will change that, of course. Second, since I'm only a month away from TH 9 - an archer queen would have turned both of my attacks of this weekend into three-stars. 90-ish percent, only clean-up work to do and still plenty of time ... but out of troops ;)

So ... the 100% sure in advance to get 3 stars feeling of the medium-to-advanced TH 7 (dragons will demolish any other TH 7) is not quite back. But I begin to get a feeling for GoWiPe. And first thing I'm going to do in that lab, once I have a lab level 7, are balloons. We wants them black evil things, preciousssss .... :)

If you want 2 stars use dragons and balloons. ....if you want 3 stars use lvl 4 hogs

I would always go 25 Minions and the rest Balloons with 2 Rage and a Heal

max th8 with AD6, Tesla6, WizTower6 and ArchTower10 with proper design (AD covered by Wiz,Arch & Tesla and tanked by storages) and trap/airbomb placements require exacting dragoon deployment along with spells. any deviation by the dragons out of core and into the dreaded next closest building syndrome turns an easy 3 star into a 1 or lucky 2 star.

Honestly, if you can spot the double giant bombs, hogs 4 have been the most consistent 3 star in our clan. My only attack is Mass Dragon with cc loon backup. I have hogs2, minions2, valk 1, pekka1 and waiting on golem to finish. I would love to get my loons 4 to 5 but having difficult time breaking 2m to research them, what with the cost of 2 dragon3 raids per war 3x per week, lol. After donating 30-40 wizards 5 and 5-10 dragons and the occaisional pekka, I'm always broke, lol.

On TH7, one can save as you never need 10 dragons vs 1 AD5, my goto is 3-7 drags, 5 minions rest loons with loons5+ in cc will kill any th7.

On max th8, I have failed to 3 star more than I have 3 starred. On Mid (AD5,5,5/6, wiz5,5,/6) I am usually 90-95% 3 star. My mates who hog, have 80-90% success on max th8.
Before I upgraded for golem, I had good success getting 2-3 stars with WiVaPe provided the base was open enough to let the valks get to as many building inside as possible. Some of the socalled antihog bases are perfect for valks. Walls are bad for valks.

So I would say:
1- Hogs4
2- Dragoon (drag3 loon5)
3- Mass Drags

4- Any form of wipe below max wipe (GiWiPe, GoWiPe, GoWiVaPe, GoVaPe)

hard for a TH8 to 3 star a well laid out MAX TH8...my max TH8 base was never three starred by another TH8

I was a few weeks into th8 3starring top th8s maxed sometimes and destroyed and demolished. Im not giving up my secrets tho. Just get creative and do your research and prep

Why bother getting creative? Just dragloon or hog the base and it's an easy 3 star.

Now that my ADs are lvl6, I've yet to be 3 starred in a clan war. Usually get dragon rushed. And they usually fail.
Dragons are duuuuuuumb.


I only have lvl3 hogs and the skeleton trap screws em up every time.

Drags, hogs, and gowipe are obvious 3 best options, depending upon base

Yeap..just dragloon until you success....its a proven strategy, what needs to be honed is the skill.
I didnt mean to say you will get 3 star 100%, but at least 70-90%. With 2 attacks each, the expectation is at least a 3star.

All out Dragon and 3 LS ; 100% 3 stars everytime when I was TH8

there are many options... balloonion, dragon/loon/minion, hogs, gowipe, gowiva... all depends on what the base is.

Hogs or GoWiPe.

Hogs are risky for th8 because of the ammount of H Spells you have and army camp spaces. GoWiPe is not risky at all and is efficient.

Actually, warring at TH8 is very very easy. It is probably the last TH level where you can gaurantee a 3 star.
If the ads are anything below lvl 6 and touching the TH, just use the guide in my signatue.
If you have lvl 5/6 ads touching TH, google Dargoon 105, which requires 5 lvl 6 loons in CC.
Done.

I miss how easy things were at TH8....

It doesn't matter how well your base design is or if you have maxed defenses, Mass Dragon and Dragoon (105, 813 and 717) attacks will three star you if properly executed. Th8 GoWiPe and GoXxWiPe attacks arent my favorite (not enough troop slots IMHO) but can work. I've heard HoLo attacks can work at 8 but it seems a little risky (when 813 will work just as well).

It really comes down to your attacking skills. I use a variant of roundhouse v2 and have not had more than a lucky 2 star attack against me...but ive three starred bases with my exact same layout. You just have to know what you are doing :)
