Max everything before moving up, the higher you go the worse the loot gets, they want us all to pay for gems up here.
Yes loot is not bad at all at th9, in fact it is in my opinion the best place to farm in the game.
If you have maxed your primary farming army and done the splash defence 's along with lvl7 walls you will only benefit by making the move.
With th9 you will be able to get better offence allowing you to farm efficiently and perhaps it would be more fun you, it has surely been for me and i moved up with lvl 8 point defence.

If you find yourself starting to focus on dark elixir instead of gold or elixir then go to TH9.
Getting dark elixir is significantly easier at TH9.
Show a screenie of your "decent/very good defenses" so that we would have an idea.
Id say max everything except some de troops, 7+ barb king, and at least 2/3 skullies would be a good time to go to th9. That when i went. I don't think its too premature and i don't like sleeping builders :v
