you know those little gravestones from all the dead troops? they give you elixir you know. Theres your reward for defending well.
And if you design your base a bit more spread out you will get more of them appearing.
Not every successful defence gives a shield. Most just leave you the bills for rearming or reloading traps/defences. There's very very little incentive for trying to defend rather than just leaving TH outside for a (nearly) guaranteed shield. I like the idea of an incentive to defend, perhaps proportional to the value of the troops destroyed.
